Hexagram Structure
Qián is the only one of the sixty-four signs in which both trigrams are identical and made up entirely of solid lines. Heaven is doubled here: the inner trigram supplies the impulse, the outer one carries it outward, so the whole sign reads as a single uninterrupted process gaining height step by step.
There is not a single broken line — the force of light is gathered at its highest concentration, with no admixture of yielding. Hence the character of the hexagram: this is not the picture of a finished event but pure effort that has not yet met the material for its embodiment. The classical aphorism of the sign rests on four supports: origin, development, favor, and perseverance.
The last one is decisive. Unhindered growth is promised only to those who hold their chosen course, not to those who are merely strong. The ancient text links the six positions of the sign to six states of a dragon — from one hidden in the deep to one that has flown past its own limit. This ladder of images forms the inner plot of the hexagram: one and the same force travels from concealment to excess.
How It Works in Practice
In the Book's inner calendar this sign corresponds to spring, more precisely to April — a time when growth meets no resistance yet. Its polarity is masculine: the phase is active, and answering it with passive waiting makes no sense.
The horizon of the situation is long. Major changes are likely within the next six months, and the period itself favors beginnings: new projects, relocations, a change of direction. There will be trials along this stretch, but they can be passed.
The warning sounds unexpected for such a strong sign: you are standing on a mountain top with no easy way down. The position you have reached carries obligations — abrupt moves at altitude cost more than on the plain, so decisions deserve a cool head.
In personal relationships there is more uncertainty now than it seems. It helps not to leave things unsaid: a direct conversation will bring the clarity the situation lacks.
The direct advice is this: a reasonable and modest wish will come true — modest, not the maximum possible. If you have to face opponents, act resolutely and do not back down: the strength of the sign is on your side exactly as long as you do not ask more of it than it holds.
Traditional Description
Above is the trigram Qian (Heaven), below is the trigram Qian (Heaven). All lines of this hexagram are yang, which means great strength, movement, clarity, tension. The metaphorical image of this hexagram is the image of a father, leader, mentor. Heaven is the original source of Creativity. Heaven governs without changing, indicates without interfering, directs without subordinating. All features of this hexagram are yang, which means great strength, movement, clarity, tension. Its metaphorical image is a flight on a chariot harnessed by six dragons. Great strength means great responsibility, it’s possible to manage dragons only by being cautious, tempering one’s pride and clearly understanding one’s motives and desired outcome. Managing the chariot with a firm and calm hand, You can reach new lands. However, remember that any flight eventually ends, so do not get too carried away and be ready to continue your Path, releasing the dragons into the Sky.
The hexagram indicates that the potential for successful advancement is excellent, you have enough opportunities and energy for transformation and development, you have the ability to achieve higher goals and realize your most cherished dreams. This hexagram is related to the original energy from which all forms of life arise, it symbolizes success in new affairs and endeavors.
This is a favorable omen. The sense of timing for one action or another is very important, at the beginning do not hurry and do not fuss, in the middle do not get lost in trivialities and confidently move towards your intended goal, and in the end let the achieved successes not dizzy you. Be polite with your allies and do not overestimate your strength. Rest and prepare for actions. Be confident that creative changes are already in action.
Now you have enough strength to reach your goals, — use them humanely, wisely, and justly. However, if you use your power excessively or if you are arrogant or too ambitious, you will fail, and you will also lose favorable opportunities due to your complacency and carelessness. Like Heaven, feel that your opportunities are limitless, thought is clear, and everything can be achieved if you act in harmony with yourself and the surrounding World.

Beyond fullness, continued effort turns into pride. The situation is exhausted, yet inertia pushes one to keep creating — and precisely this excess prepares the repentance. The top line shows a law that runs through the whole Book: any state driven to its limit begins to turn into its opposite. Knowing how to stop is worth more here than knowing how to continue.

The process reaches full strength and full visibility. The fifth position is the ruler's place, and here the creator becomes that great figure whose support was so welcome at the second step. No backing is needed anymore: from the height gained, the whole field of action lies open. This is the apogee of the sign — the moment when the design and its embodiment coincide.

The first step into the outer sphere feels like losing one's footing: the old ground is already behind, the new one is not yet underfoot. Risk here is not a sign of error but a property of the step itself. The outcome is decided by the preceding preparation — if the inner stages were passed honestly, hanging in the air ends in a landing, not a fall, and no blame will follow.

A turning point: inner development is complete, outer action has not yet begun. Such a crossing is always a crisis, and the position is dangerous even for someone acting impeccably. The only protection is continuity: to create all day long and not to relax toward evening, when fatigue nudges one into carelessness. Whoever withstands this double strain passes the threshold unharmed.

The inner work is done, and the strength becomes visible for the first time. The second position is the middle of the lower trigram, and it echoes the fifth, the middle of the upper one: the one who has just left seclusion is already correlated with the summit of the process. This is the right moment to look for the support of a person of weight — a mentor, a leader, an ally. Coming into view is not yet a result in itself, but the conditions for that meeting are ripe.

The strength already exists, but the time to show it has not come. The lowest position in the sign marks a preparatory stage: everything happens within, away from other people's eyes. The commentary tradition holds the moment of beginning to be the most demanding of the whole process — a mistake here costs more than at any other step. The advice to stay hidden is addressed to every person, not to exceptional natures: concealment is not weakness but composure before movement.
This sign has a rare feature — a separate summary for the case when all six positions are occupied by strong lines. Its meaning is restrained: the forces of light are beneficial as long as they are governed. A flight of dragons without a leader is an image of might turned self-willed. Happiness is promised not to the owner of the strength but to the one who keeps it in accord with the general course of things.
