Hexagram Structure

The sign is assembled from two water trigrams, and they are distributed tellingly: below is Kan — immersion and danger, above is Dui — joy and release. The dangerous depth turns out to be inside the situation, while the gap of light is at its outer edge, ahead. That is how exhaustion itself is built: the reserve spent on the previous climb has run out, and a person lives at the bottom of the cycle, but that bottom is not endless. The aphorism sets side by side words that rarely keep company: depletion — and accomplishment, steadfastness, good fortune for a mature person. The key is that admitting the fact of exhaustion is already the first step outward. What is needed next is the calibre of the personality: to hold on an inner support when no outer ones are left. A separate warning concerns the talk going round — those nearby do not understand what is happening and will put about mistaken rumours. There is no need to believe them, nor to argue with them.

How It Works in Practice

The assessment of the period is harsh: this is one of the four hardest situations in the whole system. Starting anything new now is not advisable — neither projects nor sharp turns. It is wiser to lie low and wait it out, keeping activity to the necessary minimum: the strength saved in this stretch will be needed when the run changes.

At work the sober forecast is this: your superiors are unlikely to acknowledge your merits, however convincing they may be. Large wishes do not come true in this period — modest ones, on the other hand, are quite attainable, and it makes sense to reset the bar of expectations to them. The financial position meanwhile is not as bad as the general mood paints it: there are no grounds for panic over money.

There is also a resource easy to overlook: someone in your circle holds a high position and is ready to help. Their advice is worth taking seriously, not out of politeness.

Your own difficulties are no reason to close yourself off from other people's. Help others even when things are not going smoothly for you: such investments are not visible at once, but they pay off later, and noticeably. That is probably the one form of activity that works in your favour during this run.

And do not dramatise what is happening beyond measure. The period is finite, it will pass — while the habit of seeing a catastrophe in it may linger longer than the difficulties themselves.

Traditional Description

Above is the trigram Dui (Lake), below is the trigram Kan (Water). The metaphorical image of this hexagram is a completely drained lake, whose water has gone underground or into a lowland, or an empty reservoir. Such an image shows our feelings during a prolonged unpleasant situation, when we lose energy and faith in ourselves.
The sense of purpose is one of our most valuable assets. When it is exhausted, moving forward becomes not only impossible but even ceases to be desirable. Our worth is judged by our ability to respond to both these states with dignity.
Self-pity and pessimism are invariably dangerous, plunging us deeper into despair, whereas we should focus on regaining control over ourselves. If a solution to problems is needed, it is necessary to remain vigorous in the face of radical changes, poverty, and oppression.
As with an exhausted body, rest and nutrition replenish the depleted spirit. Kun suggests using these unfavorable times to learn and engage in the exploration of life, to revive our interest in it and prepare the way for future forward movement.
Remember that in difficult situations, one should rely only on oneself. Indeed, any crisis is an opportunity to look inside oneself and find new sources of moving forward. Remember, any difficult period will end, and you will become stronger, able to gain new meanings and perspectives. Possibly, this hexagram indicates that the direction you are currently moving in or the project you are working on will not be successful. It would be more beneficial to direct your energies to new beginnings, parting with the past without regret.nnnnn

I Ching Talking

There will be difficulty in tangled thickets. In instability, you will cry: 'Movement to regret!'. And there will be regret. But the journey brings happiness.

The top line finds exhaustion at the stage of overdevelopment: what is left is a tangle — the tangled thickets of inertia, in which no way out can be seen. The main trap here is psychological: fear of a new mistake, a readiness to repent of every movement in advance. Repentance will indeed come, but it must not paralyse. The prescription for the finale is the opposite of everything before it: a resolute campaign leads to good fortune. The bonds of exhaustion tear only under movement.

Execution, they will cut off the nose and legs. There will be difficulty from the man in crimson knee-pads. But gradually joy will come. Favorable to bring sacrifices and prayers.
Despite the absence of human help,
higher powers are with you

The fifth position is the peak of pressure, described through images of punishment: a nose cut off means the impossibility of going forward, feet cut off the impossibility even of standing still. The difficulty comes from the person in scarlet knee-covers: help from below exists, but it is drained by the general exhaustion. And yet it is here that the joy of the upper trigram first shows through — little by little, without fanfares. It is worth supporting in the same way as before: by offerings and prayers, that is, by service rather than by a spurt.

The arrival is slow-very slow. You will have difficulty due to the metal carriage. Regret. But you will finish the matter.
Due to indecision, there may be obstacles and difficulties in society

The fourth step begins the way out, but at the pace of someone recovering: help from below comes agonisingly slowly, and the text doubles the word — slow, slow. On top of that the road is blocked by a metal cart, the heavy trace of the third line. Regret cannot be avoided, yet the direction is right: the pull towards the summit of the situation is stronger than the delays, and the matter, for all the stickiness of what is happening, will be carried through.

You will stumble over a stone. You will cling to thorns and spikes. You will enter your palace, but you will not see your wife. Misfortune.
Retreat and dependency will be fatal at

The third line is the heaviest in the sign. In front is a stone to stumble over, behind are thorny thickets that give no footing: movement is blocked in both directions. Even home is no rescue — entering his own house, a man does not find his wife there; there is no response from above, and solitude in the crisis becomes complete. The text is honest and does not sweeten it: the outcome of this position is misfortune. The only thing that can be done here is not to make it worse.

Difficulty with wine and food. Suddenly a man in crimson knee-pads will come. Favorable to bring sacrifices. The journey brings misfortune. There will be no slander.
External luxury will not satisfy the soul

The second position is the middle of the lower trigram, and the central standing gives stability even when the barest necessities are short: wine and food are scarce, that is, resources in general. Help will come unexpectedly and from above — in the shape of a person in scarlet knee-covers, an official figure from the fifth step. Until that arrival the time is sensibly given not to campaigns but to serving higher principles: an active sortie now would turn into misfortune, while waiting will bring no reproach.

Sitting is difficult on a stump. You will enter the gloomy valley. For three years, you will see nothing.
Be careful not to fall into depression and idleness

The first line describes the daily life of exhaustion through discomfort: one has to sit on a stump, with no support to lean back against. Then it gets worse — the road leads into a gloomy valley, to the bottom of the immersion, where the light of understanding goes out for a time. The term is named outright: for three years nothing will be visible. This is not a sentence but a sober frame — a period during which there is nowhere to expect help from outside and one will have to count on one's own endurance.

A road through the bottom

The six lines build a full route: gloom without support, scarcity with the promise of relief, a blind alley, a slow restoration of ties, pressure with the first glimmer of joy and, at last, a dash out of the thickets. The pattern reads plainly: in the first half of the road what saves is endurance and service, in the second the right to act gradually returns, and at the very end it becomes an obligation. Exhaustion in this logic is not a catastrophe but a passable stage of the cycle — provided a person does not confuse which of the six steps they are standing on.
