28. Dà Guò 大過
EXCESS OF THE GREAT, TENSION OF EFFORT, GREAT EXCESS
Key Concepts:
excessive pressure, great burden, danger of collapse, extraordinary situation, excess of ambitions, overload
You have stopped at some stage of development and are not continuing your path, or you pay too much attention to just one part of your life. Redistribute your forces and attention to achieve new successes.
At the top is the trigram Dui (Lake), below is the trigram Xun (Wind). The metaphorical image of this hexagram is a lake that has overflowed its banks, whose waters rise to the upper branches of trees. Water seeks an exit, further movement, the accumulated energy becomes too much for the existing shores and boundaries.
This metaphorical image is complemented by the appearance of the hexagram, which can be interpreted as a wooden beam, strong in the middle (four Yang lines), but weak (lacking solid support) at both ends (lower and upper Yin lines).
The interpretation of this hexagram is dual. On one hand, a large amount of strength and resources has been accumulated, you are likely in a happy period of your life. Your past ambitions and results have brought success, however, for some reason, you have stopped and do not continue your path. On the other hand, a situation is possible where you pay too much attention only to one aspect of your life at the expense of others (the most common example is excessive enthusiasm for career or work, when there is no time and energy left for relatives and close people).
One of the possible strategies will be retreat, regrouping, redistribution of forces, energy, and attention. On the other hand, if you have been preparing long and hard for an important stage in your life, remember that if you water a tree endlessly, its roots will rot. Perhaps it is time to use the accumulated resources and forces, the right moment has come, and, if ignored – the consequences will be unfavorable. If you make a decision and decide to act – the situation flourishes, like a dried-up tree that blooms again.
The wise ruler knows that a complex situation often hides the opportunity for a transition to new development and success, and uses extraordinary circumstances for unconventional actions (up to leaving the situation).
