46. Shēng 升

Above is the trigram Kun (Earth), below is the trigram Sun (Wind). The metaphorical image of this hexagram is the soft, steady, and continuous growth of a young tree blooming at the beginning of spring. Just as well-nourished young trees effortlessly reach upwards, we too find that movement from a lower to an upper level at this time is easily achievable.
We are advised to make the most of these favorable conditions, but to move forward gradually and unhurriedly. Like the growth of a tree, our growth is guaranteed, though not instantaneous. Impatience and haste are usually symptoms of anxiety about our progress, but Sheng assures us that at this time such doubts are unfounded. Success will come if we continue to move forward confidently and decisively.
To continue this harmonious forward movement, we are advised to exhibit our willpower and self-control, as the only possible obstacles at present are those that arise within us, such as pride and laziness. During this period, all new achievements, from organizing a new business to marriage or conceiving a child, are very favorable.
But remember that the greatest benefit comes from the path of small steps (small efforts). Just like a tree grows gradually, every day, without breaks, and will eventually transform from a small sapling into a large and strong plant, daily efforts are rewarded, turning into substantial results. As the figurative language of the I Ching says: "Do not leave what is close and do not seek what is far, do not dwell in the state of empty illusions, dwell in the fullness of reality." Do not forget to take an example from wiser, more experienced, and stronger people in your surroundings.
