The doubling of the sound of thunder provokes a sense of fear and anxiety. Zheng denotes events as sudden as a thunderous impact. These events can range from natural disasters to loss of wealth, humiliation, disputes, and even violence.
Such disturbing events can be constructive if we are capable of accepting the challenges thrown at us. Often, a shock or disaster is required to shake us into evaluating the foundations of our life. In the I Ching, this is intensified by associating thunder with the energy of spring. By making us pause and think about the dangers that have entered our life, the shock symbolized by Zheng often heralds the beginning of something and deepens self-awareness. Much can be achieved if we take responsibility for our troubles and seek new perspectives.
As soon as this period of adversity and anxiety passes, there will be chances to see how our life can become healthier. In such times, we should beware of returning to our previous way of thinking. Like thunder Zheng, our strength can be doubled if we seize this opportunity to learn.
The Book of Changes also says: “Futile (senseless) thoughts in a person are like hungry wolves, prowling here and there. No sooner does one thought break off, as another one arises. Thoughts follow one another, which is like peals of thunder, shaking everything incessantly.” Watch your thoughts and value the sense of fear, which, like fire, can warm and mobilize you if you are able to control it.
