Hexagram Structure
The eighth sign continues the seventh: there an army was winning a victory, here the victory is being secured. Both signs are assembled from the same trigrams, only swapped — the danger that stood inside has come out and become the depth around which everything living gathers. The plot of the sign is a timely drawing together.
The aphorism ties good fortune to two conditions: to get to the very foundation of what is happening, testing yourself by divination, and not to be late. Whoever drags out joining trades the role of a participant in the victory for the role of the defeated. The sign has a structural peculiarity as well: one solid line falls to six positions, and everything else gravitates toward it — the source calls that mechanism the action of a minority, and in the ninth sign it will repeat with the sign reversed.
Before the drawing together, a selection is required: only kindred forces unite, and everything alien has to be removed or subordinated beforehand. In terms of knowing, this is the moment when new higher knowledge grows together with earlier experience into one system.
How It Works in Practice
The worst of this situation is already behind you, though some of the hard questions are still open — counting on instant ease is not worth it. What remains of the road is simpler than what has been walked, but it still has to be walked, and better without illusions about a ready-made result.
The main resource of this period is jointness. Luck comes now through working with other people rather than alone, so agreements and shared projects are worth more than solo attempts. Carry out your obligations carefully: negligence in them eats away at exactly the trust everything rests on. Games of chance and risky bets during this period are a loss-making occupation; the sign calls the time unsuitable for them outright.
For close relationships the sign proposes an unusual measure: mutual understanding and respect of the kind that binds a teacher and a student. This is not about hierarchy but about the readiness to hear one another and to admit that the other person has something to teach you.
Plain advice: take part in shared undertakings and keep faith with those you are already tied to. Whether your wishes are fulfilled depends now less on personal pressure than on the ability to follow sensible counsel — from management, from elders, from tested friends. Join while the doors are open: in this sign, delay costs more than any mistake made on time.

Above is Kan (Water), and below is Kun (Earth). The metaphorical image of this hexagram is the world ocean, consisting of many separate water flows, lakes, rivers, and seas. Water is what, by moisturizing, nourishes a great multitude of objects. Moving across the Earth, water freely communicates through streams. Observing this, a wise ruler realizes the vastness of the country entrusted to him imposes limitations on the execution of unilateral governance. To come into contact with a multitude of people and to kin with them, many states are established and endowed with territories and possessions. They kin with other rulers, prompting them to unite with their state. In this way, governance is carried out, and the wise ruler governs those with whom he does not interact directly.
The I Ching often uses the image of governing a country under the leadership of a wise ruler, so an alternative image for understanding this hexagram could be a country whose governance is evenly and wisely distributed among regions and the center, or a large organization where the leader correctly delegates authority, not confining the solution to all problems and questions to himself.
By giving – we receive, by sharing – we become richer, by uniting – stronger. We cannot achieve happiness and well-being, acting alone and not uniting with other people. Attraction between people arises naturally, to resist and assert one’s egoism is unreasonable and destructive from the standpoint of achieving a result. Hence the main image of Bi — union and mutual aid. The five broken lines of the hexagram are bound together because they are united by a strong fifth Line. The leading position of this line guarantees that they can further strengthen their true interests.
Like waters that strengthen in union, communities strengthen. There is nothing more favorable than harmonious relations between people. To survive and thrive, people love their neighbors and care for each other.
To achieve this, we must pay attention not only to those around us but also to our inner self. Through our mistakes and misunderstandings, we discover guiding principles that make relationships work. The top step shows a drawing together that has lost the main thing — the object itself. The process formally continues, but the purpose is gone, and what is left is empty motion by inertia. The beginning was missed earlier, and without a beginning there is no completion: the situation either degenerates or breaks over into its own opposite. The outcome of this position is unfavorable — the foundation is lost, and no amount of activity will replace it. This is the sign's final warning about the price of being late.

The fifth position is the summit of the sign, that single whole line. The image of the step is an old form of hunting in which the animal is surrounded on three sides only: whatever runs straight ahead gets away free. This drawing together is arranged the same way: people gather to the strong one without compulsion, there are no prohibitions for those who come, and that is why the union holds. The freedom of those approaching is framed by necessity but not abolished by it. The one standing at the center acts openly and needs no props — the plainness of his position does the work of attraction by itself.

The crisis is past and joining is possible again — but only outwardly now. Deep kinship stayed on the lower steps; what connects now is not consonance but position: the way counselors are close to a ruler by service and not by friendship. For this step such an arrangement is no defeat. Good fortune here comes from steadiness in keeping what there is, without trying to squeeze out of the relation a depth that was never in it. Nearness in space is also a bond, if nothing more is demanded of it.

The third step is the crisis of the sign. The wish to draw close has not gone anywhere, but the right time has passed, and the people nearby are not the ones worth going to. This is the position of the latecomer: the consonance of the second step is no longer available, concentration has been lost, and every movement runs into opposition. The ideal is still visible and can no longer be realized — the whole tension of the position is made of that gap. The lesson is hard: in a drawing together, timing decides no less than sincerity.

Ordinary common sense works at this step, and it is what folds the first ties into a system.
The six steps add up to one curve: a sincere beginning, inner consonance, the failure of the latecomers, closeness by service, a free union around a strong center — and emptiness where the time has finally run out. Hence the general conclusion of the sign: a drawing together lives as long as it is timely and rests on inner truth rather than on form. Whoever goes toward union on time and with no second thought gets more than they were looking for; whoever postpones discovers there is nothing left to join.
