Hexagram Structure
At the bottom of the sign stands Qian, the full trigram of Heaven — three strong lines ready to act. Above it is Kan, Immersion: water ahead, a zone of risk that cannot be taken by force. That arrangement sets the meaning of Xu: the creative impulse is already gathered, but it is held inside and has not yet been brought out.
Waiting here is not a pause in one's affairs, it is the work itself — the steady accumulation of causes out of which events will later grow on their own. The aphorism ties this to holding an inner truth: something genuine, and therefore bound sooner or later to show itself with brilliance.
To whoever waits out of a fullness of strength rather than out of confusion, the sign permits even a large undertaking — the ford across the great river is open. The opposite case is caught by an old parable about a farmer who pulled at his sprouts to make them grow faster and ruined the whole field. Forcing ripeness makes no sense; restraint has to be natural.
How It Works in Practice
By the calendar of the sign this time answers to spring — the phase where everything is already growing and nothing has ripened yet. Hence the main warning: actions taken in too much of a hurry will bring nothing but harm right now, and that harm will be hard to undo after the fact. The caution applies across the board — to decisions, to conversations, and to attempts at forcing the situation through.
In practical affairs a pleasant turn is coming: your material position will improve suddenly, without a long build-up on your part. The wait is not long — in about two months support will arrive from a person you were not counting on at all. Do not push it away merely because it was not in the plan: in this phase it is exactly such unforeseen allies who turn out to be the most useful.
In personal life an attraction to someone older than you is possible. In itself it is no problem, but putting the interest on display is not worth it: attention that is too obvious will work against you now and scare off what might have taken shape by itself. Let the liking show at its own pace.
The general advice is to wait and gather strength. Waiting does not cancel the work: plan the next steps energetically, giving them everything, but test every decision for prudence. Energy into the preparation, caution into the execution — in that pairing the spring phase yields its best result.
Traditional Description
Above is the trigram Kan (Water), below is the trigram Qian (Sky). The metaphorical image of this hexagram is clouds that have gathered, from which rain will soon pour. Rain refreshes everything growing on the earth and provides mankind with food. We must learn to wait for it, despite our immediate need for it. We cannot influence natural phenomena: so in the described situation, the best strategy is waiting, which is undertaken with the purpose of preparation. These are small thoughtful steps on the path to realizing our designs, the hexagram warns us against impulsive and thoughtless actions.
The image of a wise ruler, who ‘drinks and snacks during a merry feast’ can be interpreted as the image of feeding oneself, one’s body, mind, and spirit. There is nothing negative in waiting if not focused solely on it. Soon the situation will develop, so wouldn’t it be better to spend this time beneficially, enjoying life and at the same time clearly seeing tomorrow.
Xu does not advise us to worry prematurely about anything or to interfere in matters ahead of time. Nor should we exhaust ourselves. Now is not the best time for battle, the situation cannot be changed, the opponent is too strong. Rather, this hexagram recommends using the time of waiting as spiritual and physical preparation. To reconcile with waiting, to cultivate the quality of patience — does not mean to abandon ambitions. Allowing us to nourish our body and spirit, patience enhances our ability to use favorable opportunities.
Waiting is hard when we are not sure that everything will happen in the best possible way and in its own time. We can learn to endure an apparent delay in movement if we firmly believe in the favorability of the future. When we internally believe in the achievability of our goals, the act of waiting itself can become a cause for joy.

The top line brings back the image of the cave, but with the sign reversed: now one enters it instead of breaking out of it. Personal narrowness no longer darkens the mind, so the cave has stopped being a prison. Then come three unhurried guests — creative forces gathered on the first three steps and returning to the person, the way the powers of youth come back in old age. The fifth line is the reward for a road walked correctly. Old knowledge and new experience are at last brought into accord, the struggle is over, and waiting turns into rest at a laid table. There is no more reason to bustle: everything that had to be won has been won, and the good fortune of this step is guaranteed not by luck but by the quality of the four steps before it. This is the moment of summing up — a quiet point where what has been reached settles into a whole picture, before the situation moves on.

The fourth position names things plainly: waiting in blood. Outwardly a person may look calm, but inside a fight is going on to hold the knowledge gained against the forces working the other way. This is the most active form of waiting in the whole sign — not patience but defense. The commentary stresses that only such strained work lets one come out of the cave: leave the closed world of one's own ignorance and stand in the clear world. The price of that exit is high, and the step offers no alternative.

The third line stands at the rim of danger, and the ground underfoot is already soft. It is exactly at this moment that the forces of darkness and inertia come out in full strength — the image of robbers drawn by the nearness of the crossing. The demand of this step is twofold. First, vigilance: the threat has to be seen before it falls on you. Second, bringing new knowledge to the point of second nature — what has been learned must work without deliberation, like a reflex, because at the water's edge there will be no time to recall the rules.

The second position brings you out to the water: direct contact with the world begins, the first seeing of one's own. And right away small murmurs rise — an argument between the new impulse and the inertia of experience already accumulated, an inner discord easily mistaken for outside interference. The commentary suggests not sitting out one's doubts but overcoming them by an act of will: wavering is cured by a decision, not by time. Whoever can hold back in this phase, giving in neither to hurry nor to the quarreling, comes in the end to good fortune.

The first line places a person at the threshold of the process: the river is far off, and the surroundings are settled country. This is the stage of taking in the experience of others — what predecessors have already worked out. One's own struggle against false views is not yet possible: there is nothing to fight with, the instrument is still being learned. So the step asks for one thing only — constancy in studying what is already known, an even rhythm without jerks. Haste is ruinous here not because it is dangerous in itself, but because it devalues the preparation that everything further will stand on.
The sign gives no common aphorism for all six lines, and the conclusion comes out of the ladder of positions itself. Outskirts, sand, mud, blood, the feast, the return to the cave — this is one road, where every step prepares the next and none can be skipped. The danger in the middle of the way overtakes only the one who came out to the river before knowledge had become second nature. And the reward of the two upper positions goes to those who let the causes ripen. The strength of this sign lies not in patience as such but in an exact sense of timing.
