Hexagram Structure

Radiance rises here above Fulfillment: the fiery trigram takes the upper half of the sign, the earthly one the lower, and the whole sign reads from the bottom up as the light tearing free of the surface. The inner ground of the situation is the receiving, obedient medium of earth; the outward manifestation is a luminary that has already left the horizon and keeps gaining height. In the Book's sequence this sign stands right after the Might of the Great: the force gathered and understood there finally finds a real outlet and turns into visible movement. The aphorism paints a court scene: a recognised prince is generously given horses and received by the sovereign three times in a single day. Behind the ceremony is a plain sense — a sunrise is measured not by a personal ascent but by how much warmth reaches those around. The sun does not shine for itself. The paired sign is the thirty-sixth, where the same luminary goes under the earth; together they close a full daily circle.

How It Works in Practice

Affairs are coming out onto a lucky stretch. The respect and recognition you have long counted on, and not without grounds, really are drawing near, and this is no one-off payment: in time the return promises to grow weightier than its first signs. There is no need to push events along, the process is already running by itself.

Restraint with money is sensible meanwhile. The period is favourable, but saving works right now as an investment: every extra outlay not made will come back later with a surplus. The generosity of this sign is about attention to people and a readiness to share the result, not about broad spending for show.

In your personal circle an unexpected meeting is likely: someone you have not seen for a very long time will turn up nearby again. Preparing for it is neither needed nor possible — it is enough not to walk past when it happens. Such returns from the past usually come in handy during a time of sunrise.

Direct advice: trust your luck and step forward without looking back. The single reservation concerns timing. The wish will be fulfilled, but with some delay, and that is not a failure but the usual tempo of a sunrise: the sun does not leap out from behind the horizon either. Do not let the pause between effort and result upset you — it is already part of the price of what is promised.

Traditional Description

Above is the trigram Li (Fire), below is the trigram Kun (Earth). The metaphorical image of this hexagram is the Sun rising above the Earth, the time of sunrise. The rising sun brings new beginnings and hope for the future, hence the hexagram Jin foretells a period of confident advancement forward and the emergence of many opportunities. Obstacles do not hinder this advancement, or they will soon be eliminated, and we are provided with the opportunity to achieve our goal.
Just as sunlight illuminates everything around, so can clarity come to you about what was previously hidden or unclear. Complexity and difficulty give way to clarity and order. You have either already achieved the desired result or will soon achieve it. This is an excellent omen, as you are likely to succeed without exerting too much effort. However, remember that just as struggle strengthens character, too easy advancement forward can weaken it. Let success not go to your head, remember that this period will someday come to an end, as changes are constant, and fighting them is pointless.
Now we shine like the Sun, but do not forget that any radiance occurs for someone else. Make sure that the rays of your success illuminate other people, create friendship and opportunities for further prosperity. Be grateful and share your success with loved ones and friends.
Avoid satiety and pride; in such moments, it is easy to fall into the trap of selfishness. Remember, everyone can move from darkness to clarity. Enlightenment is clarification. Ancient Daoists believed that man is inherently endowed with a divine nature of recognizing good and the ability to do good. Remember about inner harmony and steadiness.nnnnn

The top step finds the sunrise already finished: the outward brilliance still holds, but no deep content is left behind it. Hard protrusions for show are all the situation has at its disposal, and it is sensible to apply them only inward, for putting one's own domain in order. For anything more — for the broad generosity in the spirit of the fifth step — the strength is gone. The position is troubling, and still it leads to good: a modest task is within reach. But to persist as though the zenith were still going on means preparing regret for oneself.

Regret vanishes. Do not take loss or gain too close to heart. Nothing unfavorable.
Great success is possible without using force or arrogance

The fifth line is the luminary at its highest point. The light is given out in every direction at once, and the very thought of reward becomes superfluous: noon keeps no tally of those it has warmed. The experience gathered earlier and the fresh force of manifestation come together here, and so the position is free of regrets. The personal balance of losses and findings stops being a measure at this height — what counts is the volume given away, not the remainder in one's own account. Such generosity meets nothing unfavourable.

If you venture forth like a hamster, perseverance will be terrible.
Your current behavior may expose unwanted secrets

The fourth position opens the outer half of the sign, and its first temptation is to occupy a height without the matching content. That substitution is conveyed by the image of a hamster: a small creature that has crept into a conspicuous place, and in an old cautionary tale a cheap article passed off as a costly one. While the counterfeit does not insist on itself, it is merely comic; persistence in a false standing makes it dangerous. The longer one clings to an undeserved height, the heavier the denouement turns out to be.

Trust of many. Regret vanishes.
You are greatly supported by those who believe in you

The third step is usually a crisis: the passage from inner growth to outer rarely goes without tension. In this sign the passage coincides with the very sense of the situation, so the crisis is lifted — going outward here is not a risk but the natural continuation of the sunrise. The person is noticed at last, and the movement is backed no longer by a single patron but by many. The general agreement of those around puts out the grounds for regrets: what might once have gnawed as a mistake dissolves in recognition.

If you remain steadfast in prominence and in suppression, there will be happiness. You will receive such great grace from your sovereign's mother.
Continue attempts to connect with those who can assist you

The second position is the middle of the inner trigram, and outward activity is not yet its due. For a situation whose whole point is going outward, such dwelling within turns into depression: the movement around has started while you are still inside. The sign does not advise forcing the exit. Steadfastness in this cramped state draws help from above by itself — from the one who holds the governing fifth position and is linked to the second line by inner correspondence. The support comes as a favour that was never begged for.

If, in advancing and retreating, you remain steadfast, there will be happiness. There will be no trust, But if you approach this generously, there will be no slander.
Despite your doubts, the right actions will lead to success and development

The first movement of the sunrise looks ambiguous from outside: a person moves forward, then draws back, and observers easily take this for indecision or for giving up the goal. There is no trust yet, and nothing on this step can earn it — the light has not risen far enough to be told apart from dusk. The sign's answer is twofold: hold the chosen direction without being thrown by the waverings of the visible line, and meet other people's mistrust generously, without offence and without justifications. Then there will be no reproaches, and the future chance of a bright showing stays untouched.

The full circle of one day

This sign has no separate summing-up for the case where all the lines are strong, but the six steps add up to a whole story. The sunrise begins with a step mistaken for a retreat, passes through the narrowness of waiting, wins the recognition of many, gets past the temptation of an undeserved height, reaches a generous zenith and ends with a remainder of strength fit only for domestic matters. One measure runs along the whole road: how much light reaches others. The steps where a person gives are marked with good fortune; the steps where they appropriate height or brilliance, with a warning.
