Hexagram Structure

After the sign of the dimmed light the circle of activity narrows by itself: having stepped back from wide outward affairs, a person concentrates on what is nearest — the home. The order of the trigrams matters here. Radiance stands below, in the inner half of the sign: warmth and clarity make up the foundation of the household. The wind that penetrates everywhere takes the outer half: what goes outward is not heat but an even, soft influence. Ancient thought saw in such a narrowing not a flight from the world but its foundation — until one's own house is in order, taking on the ordering of anything larger is premature, and the order established in a family spreads in circles wider than its walls. The central figure of the sign is the mistress of the house: the aphorism promises good precisely to a woman's steadfastness, to the constancy of the one who holds the inner life of the home. The reading of the six lines adds a second support — the responsibility of the head of the family, without which even the warmest household gradually comes apart.

How It Works in Practice

What you have planned is coming true now, but not single-handed: your hopes will be fulfilled with outside help, and that is no humiliation but a feature of the period. Matters move through people ready to lend a shoulder — relatives, friends, well-wishers. It is wiser to accept their part with gratitude than to insist on complete self-sufficiency and spin your wheels. Asking for help right now is not a sign of weakness but the shortest road to the goal.

The best use of the coming time is the home itself. Family evenings, conversations with friends, quiet within your own walls are not a breather between tasks now but the main content of the period. Pleasure taken in the close circle is a direct indication of the sign, not a consolation prize for those who missed out on something bigger. What is grown in this circle will stay with you longer than any outward success.

The direct advice concerns geography. Your place is where the heart pulls, and right now that coincides with home. A scheme to move house, a decision to tear yourself from your own parts in search of a better lot, is a mistake that will show itself very quickly; there is no need to test it on your own experience. Roots feed you in this period; the road impoverishes. If you are unsure where to go, the answer is simple: nowhere. Whoever stays among their own wins without a fight.

Traditional Description

Above is the trigram Xun (Wind), below is the trigram Li (Fire). The metaphorical image of this hexagram is a husband and wife interacting within the family like the forces of wind and fire. In ancient China, it was believed that in a harmonious family, the woman manages the inside (family), and the man – the outside. This is how wellbeing in relationships is achieved. Just as hot air from ignited fire is needed to heat a home, so are the comforting and strengthening words (Wind) coming from the inner spirit (Fire) of each family member.
This inner fire needs to be maintained as carefully as the fire in the hearth. Too few logs will give too little heat, and the family will not want to gather around the hearth. Similarly, meaningless and empty words will not be able to unite people.
Openness and sincerity are necessary for a well-organized family and for a harmonious society. A happy family is based on complementary roles and responsibilities of the father, mother, and children. Every person, family, and group needs a healthy balance of Yin and Yang qualities. Each person involved in any affair needs to know how they can contribute to it. Those who have taken on the role of leaders must inspire others by cultivating love and loyalty to their cause and their followers within themselves.
As the I Ching indicates: “When Fire burns, Wind is born by itself, so Wind and Fire are one family. The wise ruler, observing this, realizes that Wind and Fire are always combined. The life (birth) of Wind necessarily arises from Fire. In other words, the perfection of the object arises from itself. If you are correct, people around transform effortlessly.”nnnnn

The top line secures what has been done. The authority of the householder, by the end of the road, rests on two supports at once: on truthfulness — and on the firmness with which that truth is followed. Severity here has nothing to do with cruelty; it is a refusal to substitute convenience for truth even in small things. A house where the master's word weighs as much as his deeds lives to a happy conclusion: the household goes on working by itself, no longer needing constant supervision, and outlasts the one who built it.

At the fifth step the inner life of the house becomes visible from outside: the ruler himself comes near to the one who has managed to order a family. Honour of this kind easily throws people off — it tempts one to read the visit as an invitation into the larger world and to take up an outward career. The sign advises not to take what is happening to heart. The person's value grew precisely out of immersion in their own circle, and to trade it for publicity would destroy the cause of the recognition itself. The home remains the work; the honours are only its reflection.

The fourth position shows the result of a settled household: the house grows rich. Prosperity here is neither luck nor inheritance but the direct consequence of methodical management — of what was laid down on the lower steps. The place of the line helps too: it stands right next to the fifth, the governing position, so the efforts of the house are in accord with the one who directs it. Wealth of this origin is stable — it grew from within rather than falling in from outside, and the sign rates it by the highest measure, as happiness large and deserved.

When there are stern shouts among the household, there will be regret for sternness, but also happiness. When the wife and children chatter and laugh, in the end, there will be regret.

The third step, the crisis, puts the head of the family before a choice between two imperfections. Strictness to the point of harshness — and later regret over a tone that broke. Or softness to the point of indulgence, when the household chatters and laughs the days away while the order quietly comes apart. The sign weighs both outcomes and prefers the first: harshness will be regretted, but the order will stay intact; licence will have to be regretted later — together with the house that was lost. Responsibility on this step is worth more than pleasantness, and it is better to overpay in strictness.

The second line is the inner centre of the sign, and the mistress of the house holds it. Her strength looks everyday: food, stores, the daily keeping of the household. This step requires no ventures outward and does not even allow them — there is no point looking for an outer field, everything essential happens at the hearth. Such concentration reads easily as passivity, but it is exactly what is called fortunate: constancy within the inner circle weighs more than any movement beyond it, and following no one is no flaw here but an exact fit to one's role.

Setting up a house begins with a boundary: first close your own circle, separate the inner from the outer, and only then settle into it. Early self-discipline is the main instrument of this step. Habits established in the first days hold a house together for years, while what is let slip at the start takes long to put right, and with shame. Whoever sets the order straight away will have nothing to repent of: the grounds for regret are removed before they have time to arise. The beginning matters more than the scale here — the circle may be quite small, as long as it is drawn.

A house as a small state

The sign has no summary for the case where all the lines are strong; the general sense is gathered from the six steps. A house is built in a definite order: first the boundary and discipline, then the settled inner work, then the strictness that guards the household — and only after that come prosperity, recognition and solid authority. Skipping a step does not work: prosperity without discipline leaks away, recognition without immersion in one's own work turns hollow. A house ordered this way becomes a model of order far beyond its own walls; a disordered one prepares the discord of which the next sign already speaks.
