Hexagram Structure
The build of this sign inverts the previous one, the thirty-fifth: there the fiery trigram stood above the earthly one, here Fulfillment covers Radiance from above. The light ends up inside, under the thickness of the earth. From this comes a double reading of the situation. The first is a necessary retreat: knowing when to fold up one's activity is valued on a par with knowing how to step forward, because it saves one from a final defeat.
The second, less obvious, is the descent of the enlightened toward those who stand lower: the light goes down into the thick of unenlightenment not out of weakness but with a task. The aphorism of the sign is short and severe — in hardship what helps is steadiness. Courage is needed to let one's own brilliance dim, and patience to keep one's inner rightness through that dimming.
The order of the trigrams is telling as well: clarity makes up the foundation of the personality, while yielding submission to circumstances is only the outer layer. Further along the chain of signs, withdrawal from wide activity leads to a concentration on the household circle — the thirty-seventh hexagram.
How It Works in Practice
Things are most likely going well for you right now — and that is exactly what calls for caution. A run of luck is not open-ended, the setting is preparing to change, so decisions should be made with thought and with a margin of safety, not on the expectation that luck will cover everything. Overconfidence at such a moment costs more than any external obstacle.
In practical matters, prepare for distorted optics from the outside: your actions may be read the wrong way, and you yourself may be seen as fortune's favorite who gets everything for free. Arguing with that is useless and unnecessary. The misunderstanding will disperse on its own; it only needs time.
In personal life this is not a period for adventures. Light romances and reckless attachments can tangle the situation more than they look capable of at the start — abstaining from them is the wiser course. The close ties you already have are worth more than any new temptation of this time.
The plain advice is everyday: be sparing. This is not only about money, though about money first of all — strength, time and reputation are worth conserving too. Wishes will not come true in this period, and that is no reason to push harder: the sign describes an evening, not a morning. Waiting out the darkness while keeping what you have makes more sense than spending your reserves storming a closed door.

Above is the trigram Kun (Earth), below is the trigram Li (Fire). The metaphorical image of this hexagram is the onset of night as the sun hides behind the earthly horizon. Ming I reminds us that darkness is as inevitable as dawn. During such periods, further progress is extremely difficult. It is wisest to stop now, replenish your energy, and patiently wait for the sunrise and further progress.
In dark times, power usually falls into the hands of similarly dark people. Ming I tells us that now is not the time for open opposition against such people and even not the time to oppose them, as such actions could lead to being engulfed by darkness. In some situations, we need to hide our inner light in order to achieve our goals.
This does not mean that we should give our power to the wrong person or plan. We should cultivate external detachment and internal persistence. We will remain in balance between dangerous candor and harmful deception and can continue to exist as living light in the darkness.
An alternative meaning of this hexagram is hidden in the language of the I Ching, which says: “The wise ruler, observing this, realizes that one engaged in self-improvement on the Path is among many people. If in this situation excessive Clarity is used, it frightens the foolish, alerts the mediocre, and easily attracts slander and destruction. Thus, in relationships with people, it is necessary to maintain clarity but apply darkening.” Sometimes it is not wise to be too open, neither in plans nor in thoughts, as it does not bring any benefit. High position, possession of confidential information, development of strategic plans – these are not things to be openly shared with everyone indiscriminately. The hexagram warns us and indicates that we need to understand with whom and for what reason communication occurs. The top line closes the cycle: there is no radiance left, only the memory of it. The one who used to rise to the very sky now sinks into the earth — the movement runs to its end without stops or concessions. The position is genuinely hard, and the text does not soften its verdict. The fifth step is the fullest showing of the situation, and here the sign recalls an ancient sage who preferred life among foreign tribes to service under a man unworthy of power. Fame was within reach — he turned it down deliberately, because the price would have been his inner honor. The steadiness of this position is no heroic pose but an everyday loyalty to oneself in conditions that do not encourage loyalty. Light hidden that deep is not visible from outside at all — and yet it is intact.

The fourth position moves the defeat from outward circumstances into inner experience: the blow reaches the belly, the very core of the being. The decline is no longer watched from the side — it is carried inside. A person leaves the accustomed surroundings, goes out past the gates of house and yard, and takes along not a grievance but a sober sense of what is happening. This is the mood of self-surrender: the former heights are given up willingly, without the illusion that they will return around the next bend. A clear understanding of the darkness is the only property worth carrying away from this step.

The third step turns the decline into work. The light bends toward the ground for a reason — it goes down where darkness comes from not knowing, and the hunt in the western quarter brings large quarry: the chief of the evils lodged in the dark can be taken. The price of that hunt is personal greatness: brilliance is spent, not stored. Grieving here over the dimmed radiance and over one's own steadiness is out of place — the temporary loss of brilliance is part of the cost of the work for which the light came down at all.

The deepening of the decline touches the very ability to move — the image of a blow to the thigh. From this step there is no getting out unaided, and the sign names the condition for a favorable outcome outright: support from outside, powerful as a horse that carries a rider clear of the blow. Looking for such support is not weakness but an accurate reading of the moment; the strength lacking within has to come from without. A person does not handle this wound alone, and the good fortune of this position rests entirely on the support found.

A decline is walked down step by step, and each step has its own correct measure: first a voluntary descent, then the search for support, work in the dark, a sober departure, loyalty to oneself in exile, and at last a full submersion. Not one step proposes fighting the darkness in the open; all six teach the same thing — keep the inner fire while the outer one is out. Whoever endures to the bottom without losing themselves meets the turn of the circle first.
