Hexagram Structure
Jie closes a trilogy: discord brought an obstacle, and after the obstacle comes release. The build of the sign shows the mechanism of the way out. The trigram of danger — Kan, immersion — now stands below, in the inner layer already passed through; above is Zhen, arousal, thunder. The energy is no longer locked in: it has risen above the dangerous zone and is directed outward.
The aphorism again names the southwest as favorable — the quarter matched to the trigram of release, that is, to the essence of the moment itself. Then it distinguishes two cases. For someone with no clear goal, it is enough to wait for the discharge: its arrival alone will bring relief and good fortune.
For someone with somewhere to step out toward, success is settled in advance — time works for the one who is moving. Behind this stands a general law of the Book: no difficult position lasts forever, and the rhythm of change itself demands that states give way to one another. Release here is not a gift of chance but a lawful phase, and the sign teaches how to handle it competently.
How It Works in Practice
Too many threads around you have been braided into one knot, and it will not come apart at first glance. Add to that a systematic error of perception: you paint what is happening darker than it is. A correction for your own pessimism has to enter every calculation you make as a separate quantity.
The main danger of this stretch is pressure from other people. You will be talked toward steps that you yourself consider misplaced and mistaken. Do not give in: yielding to someone else's insistence will cost more right now than a spoiled conversation. Hold your no firmly, even when the arguments of those doing the persuading sound well put together.
Fortune is looking the other way for the moment, but the state is temporary — in about five months your luck turns for the better. Build your plans on that horizon: the present pause is not a sentence but a gap before a change, and spending it on untangling what is tangled is wiser than taking on new obligations.
Something is in the way of your wishes, and a woman will help you remove the hindrance. Help in general will come through people: someone in your circle can already point out the right road — there is no need to look for that person elsewhere. Listen, and walk the indicated road to its end without turning off halfway: then you will see for yourself that this was the best way out available.
Traditional Description
Above is the trigram Zhen (Thunder), below is the trigram Kan (Water). The metaphorical image of this hexagram is the beginning of spring when the great force of nature releases everything that was locked and hidden, similar to relief from tension after a storm. Thunder (awakening) denotes movement upward and afar, while Water (abysmal) indicates danger. Therefore, Jie is the hexagram of escaping danger, a sign of new beginnings and a stage of overcoming crisis and stagnation.
When the storm removes obstacles, difficulties are eliminated, and forward movement is possible. However, Jie advises us not to relax prematurely and not to think that we can now unimpededly progress to significant victories. Instead, it recommends us to return to our normal way of life and balanced state as quickly as possible. Our liberation from danger at this moment is nothing more than a chance to start anew. For active and effective progress forward, it is necessary to first stabilize our current position, calm down, strengthen, and only after that conquer new heights.
As we move towards safety, we must free our mind and emotions from past difficulties. If recent troubles were caused by others’ misdemeanors, we should try to forgive them instead of burdening ourselves with resentments. If we do not do this, we only hinder our movement forward.
This hexagram also signifies striving for freedom, liberation in a broad sense. However, remember that freedom does not mean permissiveness.nnnnn

The top line finishes off what remains of the old tension. A bird of prey perched on the crest of the wall is the image of evil lying low: it no longer attacks, but neither does it leave, and while it is up there the release is incomplete. The height of the sixth position gives the right angle: from here one sees what was covered from below, and the prince's shot finds its mark. The hit removes the last unfavorable circumstance. Past this line the story flows into the next sign — into the situation of decrease, where a new reckoning begins.

The fifth step lifts release from the level of an event to the level of character. Here it is available only to the noble person — not as a reward but as a property: someone inwardly free has no need of fetters and therefore unties them all around. He turns his own liberation to the benefit of those nearby and keeps his truthfulness even toward petty people who have fallen behind in their development. Neither contempt nor indulgence, but an even honesty from the top down — that is what secures the good fortune of this position.

The fourth line calls for a decisive gesture: take the fetters off your own feet — the remains of what stuck to you at the crisis step, the ties and habits that no longer hold you up and only hobble you. While the knots are pulled tight, no help arrives. Free yourself and a friend appears, and there will be truth in him: the support that comes to someone who has freed himself is dependable and has no false bottom. That is the order of it, and it never runs the other way: your own step first, the answer from outside after.

The crisis inside the release itself falls on the third position: freedom has been granted, and it can be handled badly. The picture of the line is a bearer who has settled into the palanquin he is supposed to carry. A place taken without right is visible from far off and draws trouble: what calls the robbers is not wealth but the mismatch between the person and the position. Whoever tries to ride on the fruits of past experience where work is required is inviting the attack himself. Persisting in that pose leads straight to regret; going back to one's own load is the honest move.

The second step deals with the inner legacy of the hard time — with the doubts and small cunning that have had time to settle into habit. The image of the line is a hunt: the three foxes caught are the tricks of one's own mind, run down at last, the ones that get in the way of seeing clearly. The hunter's trophy is a yellow arrow, straightness joined to balance: yellow in this system is the color of the middle. Insisting on the old wavering has become harmful. Clinging to it, however steadfast that looks from outside, will end in regret.

The bottom line carries the shortest text in the whole hexagram: there will be no misfortune — that is all. The brevity is meaningful. The freeing has barely begun, the process is only being sketched out, and there is as yet nothing to discuss in detail: no feats and no mistakes have been committed at this step. A general confirmation that the road is the right one is enough. The start of release asks nothing of a person beyond agreement with the course of events — and after a long stretch of obstacles, even that quiet approval feels like a change in the weather.
There is no common aphorism for all six lines here, and the conclusion comes out of the ladder of positions itself. Release begins almost soundlessly, then demands an inner housecleaning, leads through the temptation to occupy someone else's place, orders the old knots untied, ripens into a quality of the personality, and ends with a shot at the last pocket of evil. Freedom in this sign is not a state but work: every step has to be taken separately, and only then does the good fortune the aphorism promises turn out to have been earned.
