Identify what is necessary for a fulfilling life and what hinders you. Confidently let go of the excess.
Hexagram Structure
A gesture of concession is built into the figure itself. Below stands Dui — the lake, the element of joy; above, Gen — the mountain, the embodiment of rest and of staying in place. Joy occupies the lower position here and willingly gives part of itself upward, while the mountain receives what is given without moving. In the sequence of changes the sign comes right after Release: the tension is gone, freedom has appeared, and without voluntary limits it would quickly degenerate into arbitrariness. Hence the main theme — conscious self-limitation, and it is proposed to begin with one's own egoism. Such a limit works only when it comes from within, from truthfulness, and is not imposed from outside. An ancient image explains the measure: where the rite called for eight sacrificial bowls, two are enough — sincerity of intention weighs more than splendour. And all this decrease is not an end in itself: it clears the ground for Increase, which stands next in the sequence of signs.
How It Works in Practice
The applied layer of the sign is noticeably milder than its name. If during this period it seems that you are too wasteful, that means and strength are going faster than they should — do not worry: the impression is deceptive and will soon dissolve by itself, without any particular effort on your part.
The time favours work of the head. Thinking plans through, calculations, any intellectual activity will give more now than abrupt outward steps, so calm preparation should not be counted as lost time. In work matters there is a concrete sign of the period: a task received from management will in the end turn into personal benefit — even if at first it looks like someone else's burden, taken on without any joy. Carry it out conscientiously, the return will come later.
This stretch will not deceive personal expectations either. Most wishes will come true, and the return will prove larger than the investment: you will reap more than you sowed — an unexpectedly generous formula for a sign with such a name. What you have in mind need not be revised downward: the period itself will add to what you put into it.
The advice of the period sounds calm and without reservations. What you have planned will be carried out, the work done will be paid for. And since you will have enough of your own, a chance will appear to support others — do not miss it: such help best answers the spirit of this time, in which what is given comes back with a surplus.
Traditional Description
Above is the trigram Gen (Mountain), below is the trigram Dui (Lake). The metaphorical image of this hexagram is a bottomless cave. The I Ching indicates that human desires are like it, and, if indulged and not restrained – harm is inevitable. Need becomes greed, greed becomes stinginess, stinginess becomes avarice. To break this vicious circle, one must have an inner core and clearly understand their desires and needs, without losing oneself in the whirl of passions.
On the other hand, sometimes we need to shed excess baggage, renounce what consumes our energy and gives nothing in return. Spreading ourselves too thin, we lose; by renouncing the excess, we can focus on what’s important and succeed.
Sometimes this hexagram can be interpreted as the expression “the hand that gives does not become poor”. By giving, sharing acquired knowledge, energy, material accumulations, we allow energy to flow freely and without obstacles, only increasing our volume and potential. Conversely, being exclusively focused on oneself and one’s needs, accumulating for the sake of accumulation will not lead us to a harmonious and fulfilled state but will only cause unnecessary tension.
In this situation, contacts with other people may be weakened or may even cease altogether, communication will be difficult or weakened. Don’t worry about this, as you have the opportunity to focus on yourself and your inner world, clearly see your goals and intentions, develop the necessary strategy for further movement.
It would be truly wise to figure out what is necessary for you to live fully and progress on your path, and what only hinders and confuses you. Without hesitation, let go of the excess. A good metaphor is to sort out current affairs or do a general cleaning.nnnnn

The top line completes the sign with a passage from personal independence to common strength. Where the egoistic principle has died down, scattered forces are drawn to a single centre — to the point that no separate, self-sufficient households remain around. A person on this step partly loses autonomy but gains the strength of joint action, out of reach for anyone alone. From here a direct bridge leads to the next sign: the community gathered around the centre is ready for increase.

At the fifth position the situation unfolds completely, and the higher qualities appear by themselves, without separate effort — as the direct result of the methodical work of the earlier steps. The image comes from divinatory practice: a precious oracle gives an instruction that cannot be got round. Just as inevitably the good fortune of this line arrives — not as luck but as a consequence built into the very course of things. Now even what was lacking can be made up.

The fourth line brings the process into outward activity, and the first thing to be decreased is haste. The work done at the first position bears fruit: fuss disappears, actions even out, and even the leftover hurry no longer spoils the matter — it turns into cheerfulness rather than error. An essential reservation of the step: it is egoism that should be cut, not one's own merits. Whoever decreases themselves to colourlessness has understood the sign wrongly.

The third position is the crisis of the sign, and it is expressed through a count of companions. When three go together, the group loses one: someone inside it changes, and the former unity falls apart. When one goes alone, they find a friend — solitude on this step is not a dead end but the condition of a real bond, a response from above, from the sixth position. There is little free choice here: circumstances themselves cut the options down. Losing separateness for the sake of an alliance is exactly the decrease the moment demands.

The second line occupies the middle of the lower trigram — the point of inner balance. It is better not to set out from here: any campaign now would turn into misfortune, while holding the position already taken will bring benefit. The paradox of the position is that decrease is already working for increase: while the egoistic qualities melt away, everything else, untouched by the decrease, quietly grows by itself. A balanced person need only remain themselves — the future gain is built into the step.

The first position opens the process with a demand to set personal matters aside. There is enough strength below, but it is needed elsewhere: the line is linked to the fourth position, and its task is to support the one who is higher and weaker. This help must not be delayed, yet rushing in headlong is not advisable either: before decreasing anything, one has to work out what exactly is subject to decrease. A considered renunciation of one's own wilfulness at the very start sets the tone for the whole sign, and no reproach will follow such a step.
The six steps add up to one story: first a person sets their own affairs aside for another's need, then holds their balance, goes through the loss of separateness, gets rid of fuss — and on the upper positions decrease turns into gain by itself, personal and shared. Nowhere does the sign demand a sacrifice for show: every limit here is voluntary and thought through. That is why the outcome runs opposite to the name — whoever decreased themselves consciously is richer at the end of the road than at the beginning.
