Hexagram Structure
Both halves of the sign are the same trigram — Xun, whose images are wind and growing wood. Inner and outer coincide: what a person enters a foreign environment with, and what keeps them there, is one and the same yielding softness multiplied by itself.
The subject is gradual entry into a space that is not yours: no assault, only seepage, the way a root works into packed soil. The aphorism sets three conditions. Development is promised to the small alone — large conquests are impossible by the very nature of such a process. There must be somewhere to step out toward: without a clear aim, seepage degenerates into wandering.
And a meeting with a great person is favorable — whoever enters a field new to them needs a guide who has already mastered it. In terms of knowing, the sign marks a turn: inner accord is achieved, and the purity built up allows a move from contemplating a thing to handling it in practice.
How It Works in Practice
The position you find yourself in is tangled, and taking clear stock of it right now is not easy — this is not a failing of yours but a property of the moment: the knots will not come undone before their time. Keep an optical correction in mind as well: you tend to paint events darker than they are, and part of what frightens you in the picture was drawn in by your own mood.
In practical matters the main thing is not to let yourself be talked around. On no account agree to actions you yourself consider misplaced or mistaken: someone else's insistence is more dangerous right now than your own doubts, and giving way on the main point will cost more than any quarrel. The horizon of this period is within sight: in about five months fortune turns for the better.
Something is blocking your wishes, and the nature of that obstacle may stay indistinct for a while — it comes from the same tangle as the whole position. You do not have to unpick it alone: a woman will help remove the hindrance, so do not turn down the involvement if it is offered.
The counsel of the sign echoes its aphorism about a guide: there is a person in your circle who can point out the way. Follow them and see in practice that the way offered is the best one available. Someone else's route is no humiliation for the traveler — in unfamiliar country a guide is worth more than pride.

In human life, this quality can be expressed as modesty. A gentle wind, due to its consistency, can gradually achieve a lot. If the Wind changes continuously, it will not affect the surroundings, but when it acts in one direction, over time it becomes a force to be reckoned with.
In human affairs, aggressive and strong ambitions often lead to dramatic changes, intensifying resistance. If we want to make lasting changes, we need to emulate the gentle, yet constant breeze.
Wind adapts to the shapes and nature of the obstacles it encounters, while continuing to subtly affect them. Similarly, a flexible character will attract friends to our cause. However, a balance is necessary. Excessive complacency will undermine our confidence and the respect of others. Moving forward in a bent position is impossible.
Sun tells us that the path to long-term support of our ideas lies in patient repetition and explanation. We cannot expect approval of our goals if they have not penetrated the hearts and minds of others, nor can we expect instructions to be followed if they are not fully understood.nnnnn

Overdeveloped softness closes the sign. Penetration has sunk below any aim at all — under the very bed, where there is nothing left to look for. The means for the road ahead are lost: the inner resources for change are spent. The worst thing at this point is persistence: the time calls for stepping out of the situation, and the person clings to stillness, so steadiness, a rescue at the bottom of the sign, turns into rigidity at the top. Such holding on leads straight to misfortune — pliancy without a direction stops being a strength.

The fifth step gives back the main thing: the beginning of the matter was dictated by circumstances and cannot be replayed, while the ending lies wholly within one's power. Hence the prescription: think the matter over three days before it is done and come back to it in thought three days after — preparation on one side, review of the fruits on the other. The faultlessness reached here makes undertakings succeed: steadiness leads to good fortune, remorse disappears, nothing unfavorable is left.

The surplus is no accident: it speaks of support from the other participants in the situation, of a concord of forces in which one person's effort is picked up by others. The crisis of the sign is getting stuck: penetration repeats over and over, and the move to action never comes. Studying a subject on the third and fourth pass is easier than beginning to act within it, but every extra circuit over ground already understood makes the understanding flatter, not deeper. Time runs out, energy burns for nothing, and the outcome of this step is named as regret: what will be regretted is exactly this effort spent in vain, once it turns out to have added no resolve.

Instead of looking at the thing directly, a person piles up intermediaries: calling in recorded experience — the image of scribes — and guesses about what is coming — the image of soothsayers. Memory and prediction stand in for the living act of knowing, and the substitution feels awkward. The embarrassment spoils nothing, though: joining fresh experience to accumulated knowledge works, the step ends in good fortune and deserves no blame.

The first attempts at entry work like a swing: a movement forward is followed by a retreat, an advance by a withdrawal. The reason for the wavering is a shortage of great strength — one's own weight has not yet been gathered, and every step looks risky. Drawn-out indecision becomes the main obstacle in itself: while a person shifts about at the threshold, no entry is happening at all. The remedy is named with a soldier's word — the steadiness of a warrior: not ferocity, but the discipline that holds a chosen direction when mood pulls backward.
The logic of the six steps is plain: first get in, then do not get stuck. The lower half of the sign fights indecision — wavering, distrust of oneself, repetition in place of action; the upper half gathers the fruit — the catch and the power over how a thing ends. The sixth line warns of the opposite extreme: softness that has outlived its task drains the one carrying it. Penetration succeeds for whoever remembers that it is a means, not a way of life: one environment mastered, it is time to prepare the exit toward the next.
