Hexagram Structure
At the bottom of the sign stands Immersion, the dark depth; at the top, Refinement, a soft penetration. The touch of a moving current scatters a smooth surface into thousands of separate glints: the one becomes a multitude of single things. That is the plot of the hexagram — not destruction, but the birth of the separate out of the general.
In the architecture of the Book's second half this sign opens a new chapter: the cosmic forces have already made the doer, and now the doer has to appear among people. The joy of the previous situation, shared with those around, turned into a question about who exactly is rejoicing — and so self-awareness arises, and everyone in the common stream begins to tell themselves apart.
The aphorism ties what is happening to serious undertakings: the king's approach to the ancestral temple is fitting, and so is the crossing of a great river, an image of a large and risky venture. There is one condition — steadiness, complete rightness in thought and word, without which fragmentation would degenerate into plain collapse.

The applied layer of this sign sounds unusually encouraging. A long stretch of failures is ending: the sun is rising over your affairs again, and the near term offers a chance to move into the lead. Above is the trigram Xun (Wind), below is the trigram Kan (Water). The metaphorical image of this hexagram is the wind stirring the surface of the water or a river overflowing its banks – a picture of flooding. These two forces are not united, suggesting an element of disunity, but although the wind cannot penetrate the water, its influence on it can be seen in the form of ripples and waves on the water’s surface. Thus, it helps remove or wash away blockages caused by fallen branches or leaves. Similarly, a strong breeze can give water more mobility, carrying it in the form of spray or mist.
Communities and people also have stagnation and dead-end situations. Huan signifies the need to disperse such obstacles, acknowledging that they entail a period of chaos. To break through serious barriers, the wind often has to create powerful waves. Huan warns us not to get lost in this chaos.

Fragmentation in full turns out to be not a catastrophe but a way for a personality to be born: the one falls apart so that each part may become someone. The only dangerous thing is splitting without steadiness — a breakup for the sake of breaking up.
