How to divine with the I Ching

To begin, you can divine using your own coins on a red cloth.

The order is as follows:

  • First, choose a time and place where no one will disturb you while you focus on your query.
  • Then you need to bring yourself to a state of readiness and attentiveness. It is best to do this with meditation or methods of concentration and relaxation. You can find an example of meditation in the relevant section of our application.
  • Now you are ready to ask your question to “I Ching” in the iTao application. Try to formulate your thoughts expansively and unambiguously, as “I Ching” answers only direct and unambiguous questions. If you ask about the weather for the week, it is unlikely you will see a forecast. It is better to ask about plans for the week in the form of a question – “Is it favorable to implement my plans next week?”. This approach will lead to an interesting experience of reflecting on the question you are asking the “I Ching” oracle.

So, you have comfortably settled in and meditated on your connection with the real world, laid out the red cloth on the table, taken out the divination coins (there are three, all of the same denomination), or opened the iTao application on your gadget. Let’s find out how to divine in the I Ching.

About the coins in I Ching divine

“The Eagle” (obverse – the face of the coin) – where the emblem or another image is located.
“Tails” (reverse – the back side) – where the denomination of the coin is indicated. This will help us understand which force, Yang or Yin, is involved in the divination situation for us. Let’s figure it out.
The obverse is attributed to the Yang force, and we write the number three. The reverse is attributed to the Yin force, and we write the number two. By tossing three coins simultaneously, we can get one of the number combinations – 6, 7, 8, 9.

9 – “old Yang,” denoted by a solid line with a dot

old yang

8 – “young Yin,” denoted by a dashed line

yin

7 – “young Yang,” denoted by a solid line

yang

6 – “old Yin,” denoted by a dashed line with a dot

old Yin

Lines without a dot (young) are considered stable, that is, they do not change.
Lines with a dot (old) are considered movable, that is, they change to the opposite sign.
For example, if you throw all young numbers, then the received hexagram does not have a transition to the development of the situation, i.e., it is static at the moment.
Conversely, if you received one or more old lines, this tells us that there is development in the divination for this situation into the next one, i.e., it is dynamic at the moment.
Thus, you get not only an answer to the immediate question but also to a chain of situations following one another.

Let’s give an example of such divination.

The first toss of the coins gave 2+3+3 = 8 – this is young Yin

The second toss of the coins gave 3+3+3 = 9 – this is old Yang

old yang

The third toss of the coins gave 2+2+2 = 6 – this is old Yin

old Yin

The fourth toss of the coins gave 3+3+2 = 8 – this is young Yin

yin

The fifth toss of the coins gave 2+3+2 = 7 – this is young Yang

yang

The sixth toss of the coins gave 3+2+2 = 7 – this is young Yang

yang

So, we have obtained six desired lines for the hexagram, now we compose it from bottom to top. We have obtained the dynamic hexagram № 59 “Huan” (dispersion, dissolution)

which transitions into the following hexagram № 53 “Jian” (gradual progress forward, progress, development, gradualness, flow).

In addition, we can find out the source (seed, germ) of the forces in the situation – this is the nuclear hexagram № 2 “Kun” (embodiment, Mother – Earth, queen).

Now we understand how to divine with the I Ching and have complete information about the situation from all sides.
