Hexagram Structure

The second hexagram is built as a mirror of the first: the same trigram inside and out, only now it is Earth, and all six lines are broken. Pure yielding without a single strong line is not the absence of strength but another kind of it. The classical image of the sign is a mare: a creature able to carry and to pull, yet without the temper that would make it argue with its driver.

The aphorism also sets out spatial markers. The southwest is named the side where you find those like yourself, the northeast the side where you lose them — and the winner is the one ready to part with a familiar circle for the sake of a bond with someone who completes them.

Hence the advice not to push ahead: whoever leads this movement loses the way, while the one who follows finds the person worth following. The inner plot of the sign is the path of the executor: from the first barely visible signs of change to the dangerous temptation to equal the one being served.

How It Works in Practice

The applied layer of this sign is not about scale but about stamina. The near horizon measures roughly two months of diligent work: the effort will pay off, and noticeably, but only for the one who does not abandon what was started halfway.

Money is a poor compass now. The sign directly advises not to give greed free rein: profit will come as a consequence of what is done, not as a goal held before the eyes — and the less you think about it, the steadier the work itself goes.

Travel is better postponed. The period does not suit long roads, alone or in company, and moving important matters onto the road is all the more unwise.

In the personal circle the maternal line grows stronger: the bond with one's mother and the support of the family's older women mean more now than usual. Someone with a serious interest in you may appear nearby — do not rush events, let them ripen.

The direct advice sounds plain: work. The wish will come true, though not at once — the tempo of this sign is closer to a tree's growth than to a flash. The follower's role now beats the leader's: join what is already moving instead of launching your own from scratch. Patience here is not passivity but a working method.

Traditional Description

At the top is the trigram Kun (Earth), at the bottom is the trigram Kun (Earth). All lines of this hexagram are yin, which symbolizes the womb that gives birth to new life, using the image of a mare, both gentle and incredibly enduring. Any creative impulse emanating from Heaven needs a nourishing and creative environment in which it can materialize. This is the Earth, whose power is expressed in its compliance and acceptance, following and support. Do not confuse this with weakness and flabbiness. The power of the Earth is boundless, all living things exist and evolve thanks to its resources and endless energy. This is the principle of maternal support and assistance in the implementation of the designs of others. By following the wisdom of a mentor, you find yourself. By supporting good initiatives, you grow and strengthen.
If you embrace the creative impulse of Heaven, abundance awaits you — in fertile soil, a single seed can grow into a dense forest. Constant changes tell us that the activity of Heaven is replaced by the obedience of Earth. If you can empty your mind to accommodate and accept the surrounding world, if with breadth and generosity you meet the many changes of this world, if your heart can contain the full rivers and mighty oceans, snowy mountains and endless forests, plains and fields – your strength will become the strength of the Earth, and nothing will prevent you.
This hexagram calls on you to listen to the surrounding world. Remember that you can yield and perceive the will of Heaven while remaining true to yourself. The world is full of wise and extraordinary people who can teach you a lot. Do not close yourself off and do not think that you have learned and understood everything – this only makes you more selfish and closed off, distancing from happiness and harmony.
Follow someone’s wise advice, then success awaits you. Remember – you are not alone on the path of life. Like the ideal image of a mother, develop in yourself unconditional love, which is above emotional attachment. This hexagram envisages a gentle, balanced, steadfast, and bold approach to your questions. Following this path, the desired result will have to be waited for, but this waiting will fully pay off. Impulsive actions will not bring you success.nnnnn

The limit of development: yielding, having reached its edge, forgets its purpose and tries to rival the one it followed. A clash of darkness with light on the far boundary is a breach of the world's order, and no good outcome awaits it: both sides shed blood, the heavenly and the earthly alike. Darkness acts here as blind necessity without clear awareness. The lesson of the step is harsh: the executor who decides to become a creator against their place is not forgiven by the situation.

The best position of the upper trigram. Yellow in the five-color scale is the color of the center and the color of Earth, and the lower part of a garment is a mark of subordinate standing. Together they give the formula of this step: stay in the middle, avoid extremes, and appear outwardly through acceptance of one's role. The commentary rates such balance with the highest measure: not mere luck but original happiness, built into the very structure of the situation.

Tie up the sack. There will be no trouble, but no praise either.
The image of a tied sack signifies collectedness, knowledge of one's strengths and resources, and their control.

Stepping into the outer sphere does not ease the strain: the position is close to the ruler, and such closeness is always unstable and full of worry. The aftershock of the third step's crisis is still at work, so everything of one's own — plans, merits, savings — is better put out of sight. Whoever keeps to the shadow loses praise, but with it goes the danger of accusations. At this step the trade is profitable: obscurity costs less than risk.

Conceal your brilliance and you can be steadfast. It's possible that if you act by following a leader, doing nothing yourself, the matter will be brought to an end.
Self-discipline and wisdom will bring you success

After the first manifestation comes a crisis: the time does not favor free action, and one's talents are wiser kept to oneself. Steadfastness at this step is possible only at the price of giving up personal initiative. The commentary is blunt: nothing significant should now be started in one's own name. Yet as the conductor of another's design a person carries the matter through to the end — service here is more reliable than an independent start.

The flat square (symbol of Earth) is huge. Even unprepared, there will be nothing unfavorable.

The main line of the sign: the middle of the lower trigram, where the quality of Execution is present in full measure. The ancient picture of the world saw Earth as a square and Heaven as a circle, and the vastness of the flat square means readiness to receive any heavenly impulse without resistance. That is why this position needs no preparation — the matter arranges itself, without special effort or exercises. The echo with the fifth line, the middle of the upper trigram, helps too: the executor and the summit of the process are tuned to each other.

The action of the sign begins almost invisibly: underfoot there is only frost so far, but hard ice will follow it with full necessity. This is about the gradual growth of the dark, cold side of the cycle — the process is already under way, though the eye can barely see it. In a figurative reading, the commentary takes this as a time when petty and self-seeking people begin to gain weight. Only one thing can be set against it: to recognize the direction earlier than others and prepare in advance, before the ice sets.

When all six lines are yielding

As with the first sign, there is a separate summary here — for the case when all six weak lines act at once. The recipe is single: everlasting steadfastness. For a force whose nature is to follow, the only good outcome lies in full acceptance of its fate, without attempts to seize the lead. This is not capitulation but the condition under which yielding remains a strength and does not slide into that very battle on the outskirts.
