Hexagram Structure

The arrangement of the trigrams here is paradoxical: Qian, Heaven, the most mobile of the beginnings, is placed inside, while Gen, Mountain — embodied stopping — covers it from above. The restraint does not put out the creative impulse but concentrates it, the way a dam concentrates water; that is the whole mechanism of the sign. What accumulates is not property but moral force and merit.

The aphorism meanwhile leads a person out of the house: one should not be fed from one's own hearth alone — what has been gathered needs an outlet into a common undertaking, up to the largest of ventures, marked by the image of crossing the great river. The source is insistent on one point: great forces need a great object to be applied to.

To perfect oneself for one's own sake is a dead branch; a halt on the road of accumulation, closed in on one's own person, is called a dangerous falling behind. Hence the double reading of the sign's name: a person not only brings up what is great within, but, having gathered it, becomes an educator for those around.

How It Works in Practice

A pause has set in in your fate, and it is worth treating as a working state rather than a breakdown. It cancels nothing of what has been gathered and takes nothing away — the course of things has simply drawn breath. Strength is not to be spent for nothing now: everything that goes into bustle and demonstrative busyness is subtracted from the future push.

Wait out the pause in full readiness — the way one waits at the starting line, not the way one waits in a queue. Keep your tools assembled, your plans brought together, your schedule free for a quick move. Do not break your energy into small change: a dozen minor matters will eat up the store that would have served for one real one. And do not try to speed the course of things by force — events pushed through spring back to where they were, like a bent branch.

The wishes of this period are granted with a proviso: the bar must not be set too high. A moderate goal is reachable; an inflated one will burn up along with the strength invested in it.

Help will come from an unexpected quarter — from people who have been through similar difficulties themselves. Their experience is worth more right now than the patronage of the powerful: they know the road from inside rather than from a map. The general formula of this time: gather energy in reserve and keep it by you, knowing that a use for it is already ripening and that less waiting is left than it seems.

Traditional Description

At the top is the trigram Gen (Mountain), below is the trigram Qian (Heaven). The metaphorical image of this hexagram is the creative force of heaven, preserved inside the solid and stable mountain. The hexagram speaks of a favorable situation – a large number of resources (both material and immaterial) are at your disposal, but they are correctly distributed and managed in accordance with the chosen strategy. This hexagram indicates great strength under the guidance of wisdom, which is very likely to lead to success and even greater accumulation and strengthening.
On the other hand, this omen warns us against idleness and lack of activity, as the accumulated resources require use, strength seeks an outlet, energy cannot remain in one place aimlessly and meaninglessly. If there is a clear plan, reliable allies nearby, and enough energy and strength – it’s time to use them and move forward on the Path.
However, in such advancement, be restrained and do not squander in vain. It is necessary to spend exactly as much as necessary, do not throw yourself into the situation headlong and hoping for the inexhaustibility of your forces and opportunities. Although the hexagram favors movement and activity, it uses the metaphorical image of a wise ruler who “multiplies knowledge of the past”, that is, relies on past experience and does not rush to reach the next point of his Path by any means.
People say: “A big ship – a great voyage.” At this stage, a person has accumulated enough strength and energy for future conquests and achievements. His experience and knowledge support him, his life potential is at a high mark. The world of opportunities is wide open for creative endeavors, favorable for moving forward and new beginnings, Your mind is free from the limitations of past experience and open to new knowledge and ideas.nnnnn

What paths can there be in heaven? Development

What paths can there be in heaven?! Development.
The path before you is clear, and success awaits you

The top line asks an almost exultant question: what roads can there be in the sky? The earthly paths have been walked to the end, the utmost height has been reached — and this is not a dead end but development. The situation of being brought up by the great has exhausted itself honestly: everything that could be gathered and carried out to people has been gathered and carried out. Another story begins after this, and the source points directly to where this summit leads — to the next sign, to the theme of nourishment.

Tusks of a hollowed-out boar - happiness.
Danger is eliminated by changing course

The fifth position brings the same principle to perfection. A boar's tusks are frightening while fury stands behind them; a gelded beast keeps all its power but loses its malice — and the weapon stops being a threat without a single blow struck against it. To disarm a danger at its source, transforming the very nature of the force rather than filing down its manifestations, is the stage of mature management. Accumulated power becomes safe for those around without ceasing to be power.

Protective board of a calf. Original happiness.
Prudence and activity prevent the problem from arising

The fourth step is the first move into the outer sphere, and it is taken not by daring but by foresight. While a calf's horns are still soft, a protective board is fastened to them — and the future threat is removed before it had time to grow. The danger of outward activity at this position turns out to be imaginary precisely because it was met in advance. This way of restraining forces — to put out a problem in the germ rather than fight it grown — the source rates by the highest measure: good fortune from the very start.

Chasing on a good horse. Favorable in difficulty is perseverance. And lo, if you exercise in the use of combat chariots, then it is favorable to have somewhere to step out.
Mastery and courage will help you in a difficult journey

The third line finally permits movement: going outward is natural and favorable here, like a gallop on a good horse. But the permission comes with conditions. In difficulties steadiness is what helps, and the main method is named as exercise — constant training, like that of the driver of a war chariot who is ready for battle long before the battle. Under such discipline one's personal movement coincides with the higher aims of the whole situation, and the direction for stepping out is found by itself.

The spokes of the wagon have fallen out.
Self-control and restraint are needed

The second position is the peak of inner accumulation, and its trap is here as well. The image is simple and exact: the spokes have fallen out of the cart, there is nothing to travel on. So much strength has been gathered inside that sitting on in oneself makes a person helpless — knowledge without application goes deaf, an impulse with no outlet degenerates into stagnation. To persist in seclusion at this step is to strip everything accumulated of any sense. There is one way to repair the cart — by driving it out.

There will be danger. Favorable to stop [one's activity].
Actions at this moment can only lead to
failure, so be patient

The danger of the first step is unexpected: it is not an outer enemy but the comfort of the inner life. Work on oneself is absorbing, and the accumulation of merits imperceptibly turns into an end in itself — going out to people stops being attractive. The source advises halting such activity in time: a correct pause at the beginning prepares the long march ahead better than ceaseless self-improvement does. The old saying about a road of a thousand miles that begins under one's foot is attached by the commentary exactly here: what matters is the right first step.

The dam, the weir, the current

Together the six steps describe a competent handling of great force. First it is accumulated, with work on oneself stopped in time so as not to be locked inside it; then it is acknowledged that without an outlet the store goes dead. The outlet is taken by discipline and exercise, and dangers are removed in advance and at their very source. The finale is a height from which there is nowhere to go on the earth, and it marks not an end but a change of task. Restraint served movement all along instead of replacing it.
