Hexagram Structure

The name of this sign carries two meanings at once: radiance and clinging. Fire has no existence of its own — it burns only while it holds fast to what is burning; light always rests on a support. Hence the sense of the situation. In the previous sign, amid danger that kept returning, a person found an inner truth; now comes the task of learning to hold on to it. Finding the truth is half the work; keeping it with full steadiness is a separate art, and that art is what the sign is about. The trigram of clarity is repeated twice, inside and outside: a truth you hold to must shine in thought and in conduct alike. The cow in the aphorism stands for pliant compliance backed by great strength; her ability to bear a calf hints that this situation opens a passage into something new. With Li ends the first half of the Book, the half given to cosmic forces and the ripening of the person who acts: practice begins after it.

How It Works in Practice

The first thing the applied layer reports: the brilliant surface of this period is deceptive. Affairs look excellent, but the picture does not match reality — you are held by illusions, and in places by self-deception you have agreed to. It helps to check the rosy impression against facts now and then, and not to wave away the inconvenient small print.

Real chances are there all the same, and sizeable ones — wherever the work involves words and the links between people. Writing, texts, mediation, negotiation can bring substantial success. There is one condition: listen to what is said around you, not only to your own inner voice — other people's remarks carry more useful information right now than they appear to.

Treat luck soberly. The sense that fate is on your side is pleasant in itself, but leaning on it entirely is risky: that very carelessness is what can do the damage, precisely when everything looks at its most secure. Count fortune as a following wind rather than an engine, and keep rowing yourself while the wind holds.

One piece of direct advice: listen to a friend — their outside view is more accurate than yours at the moment, because the glare of circumstances is not in their eyes. The wish will come true, but not by itself: the deciding factor will be the involvement of someone older than you. Do not shut yourself off from that help, do not try to haul everything alone — let it work.

Traditional Description

Above is the trigram Li (Fire), below is the trigram Li (Fire). The metaphorical image of this hexagram is the constant brilliance of sunlight, surpassing the temporary glow of earthly flame. Just as fire covers the surface it illuminates, so human wisdom enters our life and adorns it.
Maintaining Fire depends on a constant source of fuel. Often, it’s difficult to keep the fire of our enthusiasm because we failed to supply ourselves with enough fuel, such as inspiration and support. And then the Fire either extinguishes or gets out of our control.
Li reminds us that in nature, every living substance has found its way to survive. We can relearn this instinctive knowledge and move towards a more enlightened state. In affairs, this hexagram can indicate that matters will go more successfully.
Everything we know comes to us through our awareness of what’s happening and a direct connection with reality. This knowledge can be put at the service of others and light their way. In seeking this knowledge, we must be careful not to become fixated on ourselves. Nothing valuable comes from vanity and lack of empathy and compassion towards others.
The image of feeding a cow symbolizes contributing to a large project, which will later bear great fruits. We need to use the energy of Fire practically and pragmatically, not wasting it, since the nature of Fire is volatile and dangerous.
The image of Fire also applies to our inner nature. As clear as a person is inside, so clear he is outside. In other words, the clarity of our mind is important, as understanding any situation is half the success. It’s not for nothing that people use expressions like “eyes are burning,” “a person is passionate about their work,” “soul’s flame.” The energy of Fire will help advance in any direction, encountering no obstacles.nnnnn

The king needs to embark on a punitive expedition. There will be joy. He needs to execute the leader and catch those who are not loyal to him. There will be no slander.

At the top of the sign clarity stops being a private state and passes into action: light advances on darkness. The image is a ruler's punitive campaign to restore order, the blow aimed at the ringleader, while his followers need only be rounded up and rendered harmless. There is an exact measure in this: the root of the evil is punished, not everything that touched it, so the outcome is glad and draws no reproach. In closing the cycle, clarity has to clear the space around it — otherwise the light attained stays a private affair. Order in the outer circle is this sign's last work.

Tears streaming forth. But there will be sympathetic sighs from loved ones. Happiness.
Problems should be tackled boldly and worthily

The burning of the past is not painless: at the fifth step a person weeps aloud for what is lost, and the tears come in a stream. Grief here is neither weakness nor breakdown — it is the natural price of radiance, since what shines is exactly what burns. Those close by are present: their sympathetic sighs carry one through and keep the sorrow from sealing itself in solitude. The good fortune of this place is reached through understanding — losing the old is the condition of new knowledge, not a random cruelty of fate. Whoever accepts that comes out of grief with light rather than ashes.

It comes suddenly! Burning, withering, rejection.
Unreasonable emotional outbursts will scare away your helpers

Change arrives abruptly, with no preparation: it flares, and everything former is in flames. The step describes a sharp transition in which old experience serves only as fuel: it has to burn, die off, be thrown aside so the present can shine. The process will not let anyone linger in the old forms — they are already alight. For a person this is the harshest moment of the sign: what one lived by turns into material for a new light, and the choice is narrow — cling to what has had its day and burn with it, or let the fire work and walk on.

Radiance of the setting sun. If not a song to the tapping on a clay pot, then sighs of a deep old man. Misfortune.
It's wiser to accept the inevitable than to complain

The third step is the border between inner and outer, and it appears as sunset: the stage is visibly ending. The end of a day is no misfortune in itself — the misfortune lies in meeting it wrongly. One man greets the evening with a song, tapping time on a plain clay vessel; another with the sighs of deep old age, and it is the second road that leads to ill. The cycle closes regardless of our feelings; only the tone of the farewell stays in human hands. Accepted calmly, the end of a stage clears room for the next.

The second place is the centre of the inner trigram, and its light is yellow: in the old palette, the colour of the centre and of balance. No excess, no tilt — the quality of this step coincides with the harmonious order of the whole sign, which is why the good fortune promised here is called original: not won, but built into the position. For a person this is the best point in the situation — a state where the inner truth holds without effort, evenly, like a flame on a windless evening. One thing remains: not to shake that balance by chasing a brighter light.

Confusion of actions. But if you treat them seriously, there will be no slander.
To properly start a project, cool-headedness and concentration of forces are required

Knowing is only beginning, and conduct has no system yet: new information has not settled, steps get tangled, a person acts at cross purposes. In itself this is no vice — the first step is never otherwise. What decides is the attitude: take your own confusion seriously and strictly, and there will be no reproach. Watchfulness over oneself matters more than results here, and heading off a slip as it forms costs less than repairing it later. Strictness at the start is not over-caution but the only way to keep early mistakes from being dragged along the whole road.

Steadiness turned into light

The sign has no separate verdict for the case where every line is strong, yet the six steps read as one story of holding on to a truth. First confusion and strictness with oneself, then the even light of the middle, a calm parting with the sunset, the burning of the past, the tears of loss and, at the end, the setting of order outside. One demand repeats at every step: hold to what you have found as fire holds to its fuel. Nowhere here is light given free — it is paid for with discipline or with separation; but held to the end, it stops being a private possession and begins to change the surroundings.
