AWAKENING, EXCITEMENT
Often, fear or disaster is required to shake us into evaluating the foundations of our life. Accept responsibility and seek new perspectives, do not return to your previous way of thinking.

Hexagram Structure
The sign is assembled from a single trigram repeated twice: Thunder stands both inside and outside. In each half the one strong line bursts upward from under two weak ones — that burst is the mechanism of the whole situation, shown twice in a row: the impulse is born in the depth and at once repeats itself in the outer circle. Tradition regards this hexagram as the most dynamic in the entire cycle of changes and links it with the image of the eldest son, who takes over his father's business and shakes it to its foundations. It does not arrive out of nowhere: before it stood the stillness of the Sacrificial Vessel, and the forces stored up there demand an outlet. The story of the sign fits into a short arc — first a cry of fright, at the end a laugh of relief. The storm is heard for hundreds of miles, yet the cup of sacrificial wine stays upright: the shock is enormous in reach and not destructive for whoever holds to inner truthfulness. Movement here is inseparable from rest — they give birth to each other, like breathing in and breathing out.
How It Works in Practice
Success is closer than it seems, but that is exactly why it is crowded around it: someone on the side is making efforts to keep you from reaching it. There is no point taking this to heart — such resistance speaks of the price of the result rather than of any mistake of yours.
The working rhythm is better slowed down: the period suits a breather more than a spurt. There is also an unexpected turn. What you were pursuing as a necessity will, on closer inspection, turn out to be nothing like what it looked from a distance — you can yield it to a rival without regret, since what they get is not the prize but its wrapping.
Something sudden and unpleasant will happen in your immediate circle. The event will make a lot of noise but will not touch you: exactly the case where the discharge falls on the neighbours rather than on you. There is no need to step in and rescue the situation — it is enough to keep your head and not try someone else's trouble on yourself.
Direct advice: do not get nervous over circumstances taking shape this way and not another. The present arrangement is temporary, and breaking it by force makes no sense. A little later luck will turn your way as well; it is better met rested than worn out by a fight for something that was not worth the fight.
Traditional Description
Above is the trigram Zheng (Thunder), below is the trigram Zheng (Thunder). The metaphorical image of this hexagram is the sound of thunder and striking lightning. The doubling of the sound of thunder provokes a sense of fear and anxiety. Zheng denotes events as sudden as a thunderous impact. These events can range from natural disasters to loss of wealth, humiliation, disputes, and even violence.
Such disturbing events can be constructive if we are capable of accepting the challenges thrown at us. Often, a shock or disaster is required to shake us into evaluating the foundations of our life. In the I Ching, this is intensified by associating thunder with the energy of spring. By making us pause and think about the dangers that have entered our life, the shock symbolized by Zheng often heralds the beginning of something and deepens self-awareness. Much can be achieved if we take responsibility for our troubles and seek new perspectives.
As soon as this period of adversity and anxiety passes, there will be chances to see how our life can become healthier. In such times, we should beware of returning to our previous way of thinking. Like thunder Zheng, our strength can be doubled if we seize this opportunity to learn.
The Book of Changes also says: “Futile (senseless) thoughts in a person are like hungry wolves, prowling here and there. No sooner does one thought break off, as another one arises. Thoughts follow one another, which is like peals of thunder, shaking everything incessantly.” Watch your thoughts and value the sense of fear, which, like fire, can warm and mobilize you if you are able to control it.nnnnn
I Ching Talking
Lightning retreats and comes. Terrible! Even if for the hundred thousandth time, you will not lose the skill to act.

By the top line the impulse is dying down, and the main threat becomes not the lightning but one's own skittishness: glancing about on every side as the storm fades means spoiling everything that comes after. Setting out from this point leads straight to misfortune. Meanwhile the discharge no longer touches the person — it strikes nearby, at the neighbours, and there is no one to blame and nothing to blame them for. Echoes of the shock reach even household matters: gossip will start up around a marriage, but gossip is noise, not damage.

The fifth step carries the situation to its most visible point, and the pattern of the second line is repeated in the outer circle: the lightning goes and comes again, time after time. The position stays threatening, and one cannot get used to it — every new flash demands full readiness. Still there is a support: the momentum gained on the earlier steps has gone nowhere. However many cycles repeat, the ability to act remains, and that is the only thing in a storm that truly belongs to a person.

The fourth position shows the second impulse, and it is noticeably weaker than the first — an echo, not a storm. Worse is something else: the discharge lands in a viscous, yielding medium that absorbs it without a trace. Mud cannot be struck — it parts and closes again. That is what a strong action looks like when it meets no resistance: without something to push against there is no effect. The line warns that energy spent on an inert medium goes into dead silence, and no response can be counted on here.

Being thrown off balance on the third step is natural: this is the passage from the inner circle to the outer, and the lightning meets a person right on the threshold, when the old support has been left and the new one not yet found. The element itself suggests the way out — act at its pace, sharply and without hesitation. Whoever takes on the dynamics of the storm rather than freezing before it will not call down misfortune. The real threat of this position is not the discharge from the sky but one's own numbness, which turns the moment of passage into a trap.

The second jolt finds a person already inside the storm, and here it is genuinely dangerous: what has been stored up may be lost, and more than once. The sense of the position is that the way back is closed — one can only move forward, and a loss of property is no reason to stop. The climb goes on to the highest mark the situation allows. There is no need to chase after what has been lost: what is truly yours will come back by itself in a short time, without pursuit and without a fight.

The blow falls on the governing position of the sign: lightning strikes for the first time, and it is the surprise that makes it so frightening. The whole force of the fright lies in the fact that no one expected it; a flash that has been seen and understood no longer does harm. That is why the arc of this line is short and fortunate: the cry of horror is almost at once replaced by laughter, and the outcome is named happy outright. There is one condition — vigilance. The storm spares the one who looks at it with open eyes, not the one who has shut them tight.
The six blows add up to one lesson: a storm is frightening exactly to the degree that a person is not ready for it. Below it frightens and at once rewards the brave, in the middle it tests with losses and bewilderment, and at the top it checks not strength but composure — the ability not to flinch when danger passes by. The winner in this sign is not the one stronger than the lightning but the one who took on its pace and kept inner truthfulness: that alone the shock cannot touch.
