Hexagram Structure
Below is Gen, the mountain; above is Kun, the earth: a whole mountain placed beneath a level surface. The geometry of the sign is paradoxical, and its essence lies in that — the magnitude has gone nowhere, it simply cannot be seen from outside.
Why this is needed is explained by the place of the hexagram in the general sequence. It comes straight after Possession of the Great, and the world is in unbroken change: whoever has lingered at the height of success is already falling behind — not because they have weakened, but because everything around keeps moving. Humility here is neither a sacrifice nor a humiliation but a way of entering the common current again and not dropping out of development.
The aphorism adds the main consequence: it is this quality that lets the noble person carry what they began through to the end. Development is promised, and so is a sound completion. There is no reason to be alarmed by such a step: for all the modesty of its signboard, this is one of the most dependable situations in the Book.
How It Works in Practice
Circumstances right now are of middling favorability — not a collapse, but not a takeoff either. If anything is pressing on you it is most likely money: financial questions can cause unease and even a mild bewilderment that makes ordinary decisions look harder than they are.
The good news: the money side will level out, and it will be easier from there. The sign names no exact term, but the direction is set, and there is no reason to panic over the current figures. Abrupt moves for the sake of a quick fix are better left alone — they will cost more than the problem itself.
Your present position resembles a branch under snow: bent, but not broken — and it will straighten by itself once the load slides off. Hurrying that moment is useless, while restraint brings it closer better than any lunge. Whoever holds themselves evenly, without complaining and without forcing events, ends up master of the situation — and without any fight for the title.
Accept the help being offered. Refusing out of pride or out of a wish to manage alone works right now against your own wish — with the support of others it will be fulfilled. And the general rule of the period: moderation in everything — in spending, in words, in plans. This is not self-restriction for the sake of a fine pose but the shortest way through such a stretch.
Traditional Description
Above is the trigram Kun (Earth), below is the trigram Gen (Mountain). The metaphorical image of this hexagram is a person possessing great strength and many abilities, yet modest. Usually, a mountain majestically rises above the lowland; the cancellation of this order in Qian indicates the elevation of the humble.
Modesty is a quality of the mature mind, not innate, and therefore it needs to be cultivated. In the undeveloped mind, boasting often accompanies ambition, and pride and vanity follow personal success. We must beware of both these states, remembering that, even having risen to the highest peak, we still remain on the same earth.
The hexagram advises to finish started affairs and not to start new ones; it is necessary to optimize expenses (both monetary and energetic), reconcile with the current state of affairs, and not to impose one’s will on the situation.
On the other hand, if you have achieved much and the situation favors you, remember about self-restraint and inner harmony. The main mistake of people is that they highly value their virtues but do not notice their shortcomings. You may feel that your qualities and talents surpass those around you, but do not forget that the Path of life is long and complex, and there are no limits to human cognition. Laozi says: ‘The sage places himself behind, yet ends up ahead.’ Modesty is not weakness but the ability to recognize that there is always room for growth and development. For if you find yourself on the top of the mountain – the only way left is to descend. Remember, there are still many mountain peaks ahead for you to conquer.
By limiting your ego and not succumbing to the temptation of pride, we are able to work harmoniously with others regardless of their position. But be wary of those who try to use our modesty for their own purposes. Adequately perceive yourself (and your past achievements) – and success awaits you.nnnnn

The finale: humility loses density and remains only as a resonance — sounding, audible, but no longer decisive. The restrictions it imposed fall back, and activity takes the freed place: the setting favors a campaign against cities and kingdoms, against whatever has slipped out of obedience. So the paradox of the sign concludes — a quality that began in complete concealment permits, at its ebb, the open use of force and hands the story on to the next situation.

There is no counting on the surroundings: the neighbors will not enrich you, there is no support from the side, and one has to act entirely on one's own. On the other hand, by this step humility has been brought to perfection — and therefore it stops tying one's hands. Even a punitive campaign, the harshest of the available actions, does not conflict with the essence of the sign: force is applied in the name of higher aims and does not touch the inner modesty. There is nothing unfavorable in such a combination.

The turn toward ease. The quality won by labor at the previous step begins to act by itself, without effort and self-compulsion: humility becomes attractive, and people follow such a person without persuasion or campaigning. There are no obstacles in any direction — a rare formula of complete unobstructedness for the Book. Here the difference shows between virtue as an obligation and virtue as a nature: the first requires constant self-supervision, the second simply works and rebuilds the surroundings along the way.

The point of greatest tension in the sign — here the hidden mountain comes into contact with the surface. Humility at this step is not given for free but is worked out by labor, and the labor is double: to bring one's own affairs to completion and to enter the opposition to evil once more — no longer for one's own sake but as an example for others. Only a hard-won, working modesty holds that weight. The good fortune of the position is a worker's at the end of a long day, not a favorite's of circumstance.

The second position demands manifestation, while the nature of humility is concealment; the whole step is made of that contradiction. It resolves unexpectedly: to express yourself not by self-assertion but by consonance — to answer the world, to give, to fall into the common key. One's own self does not sound as a solo here, and that is precisely what its expression consists of. Holding to such a way of being is hard, so steadiness is named as the condition of good fortune: an even, unbroken keeping of this non-expression of self.

The opening step gives humility in its most general, not yet manifested form — and even here it works as a force: with it one takes on even the crossing of the great river, difficulties of the largest caliber. Where exactly to apply that force the position does not say — it is early, the application lies ahead. The good fortune of the step rests on one circumstance: the one called humble among the humble here is a person who has already achieved a great deal. Modesty after victories is a different substance altogether from modesty out of poverty.
The six steps show humility not as a pose but as a process with mechanics of its own. First it is given in embryo, then it is expressed through consonance, is worked out by labor, begins to draw others, permits an independent severity and, at last, melts into an echo and opens the road for action. At every step the quality changes state, but nowhere does it turn into weakness: the crossing, the completion of affairs and the punitive campaign it all bears calmly. Modesty here is a form of solidity, not a refusal of it.
