Hexagram Structure
The very name of the sign draws an unlovely picture: the character Gu depicts a bowl in which worms have bred from long standing. Decay here is not a catastrophe arriving from outside but the result of stagnation: what stopped being used spoils by itself. The sign grows out of the previous situation of Following — joyful movement behind a leader, once it drags on, turns into a sleepy habit, and rot breeds in that hibernation. The aphorism, meanwhile, is unexpectedly brisk: setting the spoiled to rights opens the way to development, and the time even suits large undertakings — the ancient image of such a step, the crossing of the great river, stands right there in the text. One condition is attached: three days before the start and three days after. That is, the decision must be preceded by full deliberation and followed by a consolidation of the result, or the cleaned bowl will foul again. In terms of knowledge, decay means old habitual notions that quietly distort the perception of anything new.
How It Works in Practice
Begin with an audit of your relationships: right now they are the weakest point. Something has gone out of tune with the people around you, and it is exactly this discord, not any outward obstacle, that can get in the way of what you want. Grievances and things left unsaid have been gathering quietly, like dust on a shelf, and by now their mass is palpable. There is a real risk of losing a friend — not through a quarrel but through neglect of the tie. If things have got tangled with someone close, untangle them right now, while the knot still yields to your fingers.
The second vulnerable zone is money. You are spending noticeably more than you should be, and an honest look will show part of it to be surplus. It is wiser to switch on a saving regime yourself rather than wait for circumstances to do it for you.
Meanwhile there is movement around you: for the people nearby, changes and rearrangements in personal life are coming to a head. These shifts will brush against you, so do not judge what is happening on the spot. Go through the events carefully, separate facts from guesses, and only then draw conclusions — a hasty reading costs more right now than a slow one.
The general prescription for the period is to take back the wheel. Become the master of the situation: calculate every step in advance, down to the small details, like a crossing on stones over fast water. And keep a readiness for unexpected moves in reserve — an act nobody expects of you may surprise your acquaintances and work better than any familiar scenario.

Above is the trigram Gen (Mountain), below is the trigram Xun (Wind). The metaphorical image of this hexagram is a weak wind stopped by a mountain mass. The energy of the Wind opposes the energy of the Mountain, the Wind stops and cannot continue its movement straight. It’s necessary to change the direction of force application; it makes no sense to charge at the visible obstacle head-on.
In China, it is said that the only real mistake is not correcting your past errors. There is always an opportunity to start acting differently, to draw valuable lessons from difficult experiences, and to continue your life path renewed and wise. After all, we often derive experience from our own mistakes, and the ability to make right decisions comes to us after a series of wrong ones. An alternative understanding of this hexagram is that we might be making the same mistakes as our predecessors (including our parents). Wouldn’t it be better to choose your own Path and deviate from the usual patterns that have guided us until today?

The top line leads out beyond the situation itself. The decay has been corrected or left behind, and a person is no longer obliged to take part in affairs of state: they serve neither king nor prince. This is not the grievance of a hermit but mature independence — the measure of what has been done becomes the person themselves, not a post and not somebody else's assessment. To exalt one's own work here means putting the inner task above any outward office. Release from obligations is the lawful outcome of finished work.

The fifth step is the point of the sign's greatest force. The correction of a father's mistakes is led here by a person standing high and able to gather around themselves everyone who carries healthy forces. Until the inner indulgence is overcome, activity only carries the decay further, and the first thing to do is to stop nodding along with the decomposition.

The third step corrects the paternal inheritance without softness or caution — at the break between the trigrams it cannot be done otherwise. Abrupt methods leave a residue: particulars will have to be regretted, and something will be broken for nothing. Yet the line promises no large censure, and that is the main thing. The necessity of the correction itself outweighs the flaws of its execution. This is one of those situations where delay does more harm than clumsiness: better to clean it out roughly than not to clean it at all.

The second position is yielding by nature, while what has to be set right is what a mother let slide — and there lies the knot of this step. Love for a person and the need to sort out their mistakes pull in different directions, and the temptation to touch nothing is especially strong. The text gives warning: persisting in immobility is not allowed. Steadiness, appropriate in other signs, turns into inertness here and merely prolongs the decomposition. What is required is inner activity in spite of the passive character of the position itself — to step in decisively without ceasing to love.

That is exactly the sense of the position — a person walks into a mess they did not create, and their task is not to look for the guilty but to repair. At the start the rot is still shallow, the predecessors' mistakes yield to correction by small means, and even for those predecessors such a clear-up is no reproach. The position is not safe, though: an heir takes a risk in opening up someone else's rubble. But with the right actions the line promises a fortunate end — rare generosity for a first step.
The six steps add up to a single story of how stagnation is cured. At first, sorting out other people's rubble is manageable and almost safe, then it demands more and more resolve — up to a hardness that will have to be regretted in the details. Halfway along the road the main failure lies in wait: not the difficulty of the work but the temptation to come to terms with the rot. Whoever gets past it comes out into real management of the process and deserved recognition, and at the end into freedom from the situation itself. The general law of the sign: decay does not clear up on its own, it is taken apart by hand, and the earlier you start the less it costs.
